“Attorney General Andrejs Švedas has initiated criminal proceedings against Riga Mayor Martin Stakis and Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevičius for deliberate actions aimed at inciting national hatred,” said the Telegram prosecutor’s office. , accusing both officials of “serious crimes” against Belarusians.

On Monday in Riga, next to the Radisson Blu Hotel, where the flags of the countries participating in the World Hockey Championship are flying, the official Belarusian flag was replaced by the historic Belarusian tricolor of white and red, used by the country’s opposition.

Such a step was taken by the decision of E. Rinkevičius and M. Stakis, and the latter noted that this gesture is an initiative of the city council, which was supported by the Belarusian opposition.

In response, Belarus demanded that Latvian diplomats leave the country. The Latvian government responded with a similar step.
