“The Executive Council of the International Union of Modern Pentathletes voted to postpone the World Championships scheduled for June 2021 in Minsk. The main competitions of the season will be held elsewhere on the same days (June 7-13) “, according to the report.
The specific location will be announced in the coming days, UIPM representatives added.
“The UIPM Executive Council has been closely following the events in Belarus in recent months and has evaluated the possibility of hosting the World Championships in Minsk. The sanctions imposed on the Belarusian National Olympic Committee by the International Olympic Committee in December 2020, ”commented UIPM President Klaus Schormann on the decision.
“After extensive discussions, the executive committee voted in favor of the possibility of hosting the Contemporary World Pentathlon in Minsk at a later date due to growing concern that the current instability in the host country could threaten key UIPM competitions.” emphasized.
The UIPM head added that his federation “looks forward to the possibility of holding a competition in Minsk in the future.”
The capital of Belarus was preparing for the first time to host the Modern Pentathlon World Championships. Previously, the final stage of the World Pentathlon Championship (2015) and the European Championship (2017) took place in Minsk.
The modern pentathlon includes disciplines such as fencing, swimming, jumping, running, and shooting.
The board of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) also decided earlier this week to move the 2021 World Cup to Belarus.
The 2021 Hockey World Championship was to be hosted by Minsk and Riga, but the Latvian government hinted at a reluctance to co-host the championship with Belarus, where authoritarian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko’s regime has been violently cracking down on peaceful protests since August.
For the sixth month in a row, Belarus has been plagued by massive protests over the August 9 presidential election, which Lukashenko has ruled the country since 1994.
The opposition and Western democracies claim that these elections were rigged. The opposition views her victory as political rookie Sviatlan Cichanouskaya, who replaced her imprisoned husband in the fight for the presidency.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Lukashenko, the release of political prisoners and new elections.
