Beauty becomes a luxury good: after the quarantine, prices have risen, their growth will not stop

Although hairdressers and beauty salons, which have opened their doors after a long quarantine, have promised that their services will not be expensive, some clients say that they have already felt that the desire to be beautiful costs much more.

According to Kristina de Panevėžys, she paid between 5 and 7 euros to cut her teenage son before the quarantine, because a hairdresser who had recently started his career used to apply discounts. After the quarantine, the number increased almost twice.

“I almost always paid five euros, at most seven, for my son’s haircut before he was quarantined. After the quarantine, I paid 10 euros for the same haircut. To my amazement, the hairdresser just smiled, supposedly at that price everywhere now. I understand that everything is getting more expensive, but if you keep doing it, you will have to learn to cut your son’s car, because wages don’t go up that fast, ”Kristina said.

It is true that in some places the prices did not increase. Both before and after quarantine, Kristina pays almost the same to dye her regrown hair with strands and cut the ends, up to 40 euros. When the hairdresser asked him if the prices would remain the same, he heard the assurance that the appreciation of the services could change the angle: the number of clients will decrease even more.

“Not only beauty specialists, but also representatives of many other professions were sent to downtime, some people lost their jobs completely. My hairdresser believes that when services become more expensive, people will start cutting, painting at home or go to clandestine hairdressers. Probably now some beauty teachers show solidarity with their clients and others want to make up for lost months of unemployment at any cost, “thinks Kristina.

The price increase is normal.

On the Facebook account “Sekundė”, residents of Panevėžys shared various experiences after visiting beauty masters.

“Brow correction is now 8 EUR, it was 5-6 EUR,” wrote Auksė S.

“For the nine-year-old son, the haircut was 7 euros, now 8-11 euros. The man’s haircut was 8 to 9 euros, now 10 to 12 euros. My haircut was 10 euros, now 11-13 euros, ”said Skaidrutė S.

Ingrida Z. said that she paid 65 euros to cut long hair and dye locks, and Gintarė G. claims to have paid 50 euros for the same service.

Some claimed to have paid for beauty services as much as before the quarantine.

“Don’t be scared. I cut – the same prices,” wrote Zita Z.

Others said they justified beauty masters raising prices.

“It just came to our notice then. Taxes have gone up, measures have gone up in price, automatically and the price is changing,” said Donata M.

Save the beauty tourists

Ieva Žiukaitė-Damaševičienė, owner of a beauty studio in Panevėžys, confirmed that some beauty services have actually become up to 20% more expensive, such as piercings or facials. According to the expert, the price increase was due to some products becoming more expensive.

“To not work ‘less’, some services had to be up to 20% more expensive, but certainly not all. The prices of haircuts and coloring remained the same. Of course, we are considering raising the prices of our services, but for the moment we will abstain until the autumn, ”admitted I. Žiukaitė-Damaševičienė.

Summer is usually the working year for masters of beauty: in the warm season there are more weddings, christenings and other celebrations. It is also notable that in the summer more people from other cities come to the capital of Aukštaitija to admire, because Panevėžys has a high level of beauty masters, whose service prices are much lower than in other large cities.

“It is definitely cheaper with us than in Vilnius or Kaunas, but the quality of the services is not inferior to that of the beauty masters in the big cities. We have a lot of clients from Vilnius, who come back with their parents on weekends and definitely come to see them. In Panevėžys, prices are half or even several times lower “, – compared I. Žiukaitė-Damaševičienė.

According to her, people come from other cities not only to cut or dye their hair, but also to clean their eyebrows, get manicures, pedicures and facial procedures. According to the owner of the salon, these clients exceed the proportion of former regulars who learned to take care of their own beauty at home during their quarantine.

“About 15 percent of our regular customers. Stayed at home: during their quarantine, mothers or daughters learned to clean their nails, as well as trim their husbands and sons with scissors. But we cannot complain about the lack customers, at least in the summer, ”said I. Žiukaitė-Damaševičienė.

It doesn’t work for cost

Ingrida Lipnickienė, owner of another beauty salon in Panevėžys, claimed that her teachers had not yet adjusted their prices.

According to I. Lipnickienė, the number of customers is currently decreasing and the competition in the city is really high. In addition, according to the owners, the prices in their salon are already slightly higher than the city average. In other places, for example, the correction and coloring of eyebrows costs € 5-8, in this salon this service costs € 12-15. Nail correction will cost 20-25 euros, and elsewhere this service is available for 10-15 euros. You would have to pay between 10 and 15 euros to cut a man.

“I think prices will go up where they are very low, because people work in these salons almost at cost. Where haircuts now cost between 5 and 7 euros, it should cost up to ten. The services in our salon are not cheap , because there are teachers with many years of experience, they invest a lot in the development of skills. “I do not want to raise more prices due to the uncertainty in the fall, perhaps when the third wave of the pandemic arrives and we will have to close again”, said I. Lipnickienė.

The naturalness returns

Beauty experts note that the quarantine has significantly adjusted customer behavior. A significant proportion of women give up long nails, enlarged eyelashes and opt for naturalness or delay these services. For example, nail correction was usually done every 2-3 weeks, now every 4-5 weeks. Clients often choose a hair coloring technique that allows their hair to be colored every few months, or to save money, ask the hairdresser to simply mix the dye and color it at home.

“When things get more expensive and wages don’t go up, clients start counting and even saving at the expense of beauty treatments. During the quarantine, women learned to admire themselves. Or opt for long-term solutions, like undergoing a long-lasting brow procedure. During the quarantine, customers really changed their behavior, ”said I. Lipnickienė.

Women are massively ditching eyelash or nail extensions, and teachers have to retrain. Beauty professionals who used to only treat eyebrows now offer long-term makeup services as well.

“It was the case that we hardly accepted new clients before the quarantine, we already had a well established circle. Today the situation has changed. Some clients withdrew after quarantine, so now we are waiting for new ones. Although it is difficult, all times are full ”, admits the owner of the salon.

According to her, this summer is much quieter also because there are almost no migrants this year, who made up the majority of the customers in the summer.

“We have to admit that the pandemic has made some adjustments. We are tied in the same chain. But perhaps fashion is also changing, women are massively renouncing that plastic that needs a lot of care, choosing the naturalness that is in fashion at all times ”Said I. Lipnickienė.

Stretches

Rytis Rogačius, market manager of the platform through which it is possible to register for beauty services in Lithuania, says that “prices have really increased after returning to work.”

“The change is noticeable in many services. Prices for hair or nail services have increased by 20 percent in some places. Such a number is to be expected, because after a harsh and incapacitated quarantine, everyone must stand up, ”said R. Rogačius.

According to the director of the association that unites beauty specialists, Jolanta Mačiulienė, another beauty salon may have been able to adjust prices, but did so for objective reasons. According to her, the increase in the prices of services is influenced by many factors.

“Prices have probably not risen much. Today everything has changed: the logistics of the tools themselves are already a little different, the prices are different. The suppliers themselves say that it is very difficult for them to bring goods, more expensive fuel, many things that make up the price increase, ”explained J. Mačiulienė.

Nor does it rule out that the prices of beauty services will continue to rise as gas and electricity become more expensive.

Marius Dubnikov, a financial analyst and vice president of the Confederation of Business, says that rates for beauty services also tend to go up, especially the lower ones.

“If we pay 40 or 50 euros for a haircut, the price will definitely not go up multiple times, but those haircuts that are 4-5 euros will go up,” Dubnikov said.
