The quality of the bath water is evaluated according to 2 microbiological parameters: intestinal enterococci and intestinal rods. Depending on the requirements of the hygiene standard, intestinal enterococci should not contain more than 100 colony-forming units per 100 ml of water and intestinal rods should not contain more than 1000/100 ml of water.
Additional tests should be performed when the microbiological parameters do not meet the requirements of the hygiene standard. For short-term contamination, an additional sample must be taken within 72 hours for the water quality test to confirm the end of the contamination event, and another sample 7 days after the end of the short-term contamination term.
The water quality did not comply with the microbiological parameters established in the Lithuanian hygiene standard HN 92: 2007 “Beaches and their bathing water quality” in the bathing areas of Snaigynas and Baltajas lakes in the Lazdijai district on 19 June. The number of intestinal enterococcal colony forming units in 100 ml of water was found to be higher than allowed by the hygiene standard.
This parameter exceeded the allowed limits: June 18. Marijampolė District bathing in Lake Žalytis – 1.5 times, bathing in Marijampolė II pond – 2.7 times, June 19. In the Vilkaviškis district, the Vištytis lake bath, 1.2 times, in the Zarasai lake district, the Sartai lake bath, more than 8 times, on June 16. At Vilnius Žirmūnai beach bathing – 1.2 times.
On the beach in the bathing areas of Smiltyne I and Smiltyne II beaches on June 19. The number of colony forming units per 100 ml of water was found to be more than 2.5 times greater than allowed by the hygiene standard.
After repeated investigations on June 30. In Snaigynas and Baltajas lakes, June 23. Bathing area of Žirmūnai beach, Žaltytis lake and Marijampolė II pond, June 26. At Smiltyne I and Smiltyne II beaches, the water quality met the requirements. No information has been received on whether pollution in the bathing areas of Vištytis and Sartai lakes has decreased.
Information on the water quality of 105 recreational areas was also obtained. The number of colonizing units forming enterococci in the water is greater than allowed by the hygiene standard of June 15. Found in the Nevėžis River near the Pašiliai Gardens in the Kėdainiai District Municipality.
The public with information on bathing water quality should be published on municipal websites, and the latest results of bathing water quality research and a recommendation not to bathe or ban bathing if contamination is found should be published on posters near the beaches.
Information on the quality of bathing water in each county can be found on the website of the Center for Health Education and Disease Prevention here. It is updated as soon as information is received from the municipalities and laboratories.
