The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (EIM) presented a proposal to the Government to pay scholarships to some students.

The promoters of the project assure that higher education institutions currently only provide part of the need for specialists in the field of agriculture, forestry, STEM (natural sciences, technology and mathematics), since studies in these fields are not popular. among graduates.

There is a significant shortage of specialists in these areas in the regions.

“The analysis of the study programs provided by EIM shows that only Vilnius and Kaunas higher education institutions successfully attract students to study programs related to the engineering or information technology industry, therefore, the current supply of specialists in these regions almost corresponds to the expected demand. Meanwhile, in other regions there is a great shortage of specialists in these fields, ”states the project’s certificate.

According to the initiator of this proposal, student-led incentive scholarships will ensure a steady supply of relevant higher education graduates in the regions of Lithuania, and thus increase the regions’ investment attractiveness.

The government has provided the possibility of specific incentive scholarships for undergraduate, integrated and master’s students studying with state funds.

The scholarships will be available to those undergraduate, full-time and graduate students who have chosen:

  • study programs in the field of public safety studies;
  • the maritime pilot study program in the field of study of marine technology and the study of the operation of energy equipment for ships in the field of study of marine engineering.

The scholarships are offered only to first-year undergraduate and master students who choose to study:

  • according to the study programs of the group of fields of study of agricultural sciences;
  • in accordance with the study programs of the group of engineering science study fields related to activities in the agricultural and forestry sectors;
  • in accordance with the study programs of the group of fields of study of technological sciences related to activities in the agricultural and forestry sectors;
  • in accordance with the study programs of the group of fields of study of life sciences related to activities in the agricultural and forestry sectors.

Scholarships can be requested by those undergraduate and / or master students who have chosen to study:

  • study programs of the group of engineering science fields of study related to high value-added sectors and aimed at increasing the investment attractiveness of the regions;
  • study programs from the group of fields of study in informatics, related to high value-added sectors and aimed at increasing the attractiveness of investment in the regions;
  • study programs of the group of fields of study of mathematics, related to high value-added sectors and aimed at increasing the investment attractiveness of the regions.

This year, the Ministry of Agriculture indicates that 130 students can pay scholarships from the budget credits allocated to them for first-year undergraduate students studying with state funds. The funds are planned to be paid monthly from fall to the end of the school year. The amount of the scholarship is 200 euros.

The environment ministry says it plans to determine the size and number of the scholarship later.

EIM college students who choose relevant state-funded study programs also agree to provide € 200 incentive scholarships for 12 months.

“The directed incentive scholarships would be paid to 430 people, and the total amount of such directed incentive scholarships per year would be 1,032 million. It would be paid with budget credits,” the project certificate reads.

The initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and EIM on specific scholarships was discussed by the Government on Wednesday and approved by consensus.
