“Čiurlionis embroidery”. The exhibition named after A. Zupkienė was presented this fall at the MKČiurlionis National Art Museum in Kaunas. Unfortunately, as of this Saturday, the museum, like other institutions, has closed its quarantine, so those who could not see them with the unique works of Audronė can now only see the photos.
Embroidery began in childhood.
Audronė started embroidering when she was a child, when she was six years old, and her teacher was a former neighbor.
“Then I lived in Panevėžys. The neighbor was a man with golden hands, she taught me to embroider with a cross. My mother taught me to weave and my neighbor taught me to embroider. She only spoke Russian, I spoke Lithuanian, but we understood each other perfectly, ”said Audronė.
Audrone liked to embroider. As she herself says, God was probably rewarded with great patience and optimism at birth.
“I embroidered as a child, as a teenager. Then I went to Kaunas, started my medical studies and forgot about those things. I got married, a daughter was born. But after 2000 years, the idea that something was missing in my life began to haunt me.
Our family is active, we like various active activities. Canoes, skates, bicycles, nature walks. But somewhere inside he was talking about not doing anything else, ”the woman said.
This state accompanied Audronė for about 5-6 years: “I even started to tell my husband that I was wrong, I feel like I’m not doing something, but I don’t understand what.”

“I realized that the sea has come to life”
Audronė’s daughter once saw an embroidered picture on the Internet. This is how Audrone came up with the idea that it would be fun to rediscover embroidery.
Both with their daughter set out to find ideas about what could be embroidered. The daughter offered Audrone a flower, a butterfly, a hare. But the woman says she felt she didn’t want him.
“Then, by accident, the man found an image of the sea, the roar of the waves, the lighthouse. I started embroidering and my insides calmed down. Then I realized that embroidery is something I did not do, ”recalls Audronė.
But when the job was done, the woman was disappointed: she was tired of thinking that time and effort had been invested and that the sea was dead. You do not “hear” the whisper of the waves in an embroidery.
“But if he had already, I thought he needed to be framed. And then when the work was framed, I realized that the sea had come to life. Consequently, the work must be completed. I, for my part, board, and the sponsors adjust the framework. They also do serious work until the paintings become such.
Since then, I have understood something else, that I will not show it to anyone until the job is done, ”said Audronė.

She embroidered a gift for her husband: a helicopter.
After finishing the painting with the sea, Audronė began to embroider a gift for her husband. It was a photo of a helicopter.
“Why? Because he works in the Air Force. It is very relevant to him. It seems that everything is simple, after all, it is a helicopter. Endless photos. But it is not easy to find the one you want to embroider. In one, no It is a detail, in another, the background is not that.Everyone uploaded endless photos until I found a beautiful one. super it came out, ”said the woman.
At the same time, Audronė was embroidering another image: a gift for her daughter based on her photo.
After finishing the painting with the sea, Audronė began to embroider a gift for her husband.
“When I started embroidering these two paintings, I started to wake up at night. With the surname of Čiurlionis. What a second night. I wake up and, inside, Čiurlionis.
A few months later it is the same again. This went on for about half a year. I thought, I was wondering why Čiurlionis. Music? So beautiful. But I have nothing to do with music.
When I woke up with Čiurlionis in my mind for the seventh time, I said to my husband: we are going to the MKČiurlionis Museum. Maybe I will get the answers there, “said A. Zupkienė.
The painting “News” was received in the museum.
“We just went upstairs, and before my eyes is the painting ‘News’ by MKČiurlionis. I saw it and said: we can look at the paintings by Čiurlionis, but I have the answer. I know,” Audronė smiled.
The woman realized that she had to embroider this drawing: “When I got a job, I never I did not wake up with Čiurlionis. Then I got the message and decrypted it. I have solved the riddle. “
Thus began the journey of the embroidered Čiurlionis of Audronė. The woman has already embroidered six of her paintings, all in their original size. Audronė says never feel embroidered in a bad mood.
“I finished embroidering the first image in 2013. The work lasted one year and three months. I skirted everyone similarly, up to a year and a half. I tried to embroider them to match the Čiurlionis paintings.
When I got to the museum, I was shy. I measured them with shy shivers at first. So I only asked for a one centimeter strip. I dared. And I immediately thought about what was going to interfere here.
The museum director, Daina Kamarauskienė, when we started communicating, asked me why I didn’t ask for photos and dimensions, ”said A. Zupkienė.

The idea of the next painting is to bring a stone from the seashore
After embroidering, the first image covered, according to Audronė, a good feeling that is difficult to describe.
At the end of embroidering the painting “Žinia”, Audronė and his family were walking along the seashore. “I really like stones. As I was walking, I found a pebble so large that it reminded me of something.
I brought it to Kaunas, stayed home on the dresser and saw it every time it passed. I stopped and thought. About half a month later I realized that it reminds me of the painting “Peace” by MKČiurlionis. That’s why I started to embroider this for the second time ”, said the interlocutor.
The “tale of kings” came as if it were alone. Reminds you of Audrone from Lithuania.
Later, A. Zupkienė embroiders the paintings “Fairy Tale (King’s Tale)”, “The Queen’s Journey” (II painting from a triptych), “Friendship”, “Past”. The woman intends to continue embroidering Čiurlionis.
The “tale of the kings” came as if it were alone. He reminds Audrone from Lithuania: “Not only do I board Čiurlionis, but I am also very interested in his personality. I read a lot, I am interested in his work and his life. After finishing the painting, I always immerse myself in it and find out what is being written about this work ”, said the interlocutor.
“Pasaka” is dedicated to the centenary of Lithuania, and the painting is decorated with a small poster of the centenary of Lithuania. “Friendship” is a job for your daughter, because this painting is her favorite.

Not only are paintings on display at the exhibition. One of the exhibits is the painting’s embroidery scheme, according to which Audronė works. If you measure it, it would come out about 13 meters. The Kaunas company calls these schemes the Bible of their work.
“I put the photo into a computer program, which makes a diagram. I set the desired size in how many colors I would like. But the number of colors is adjusted by the program itself. There are about 50 to 60 of them in one image, “said A. Zupkienė.
So, you have the outline, the work begins. Audronė sometimes gets up around 5:30 in the morning to do housework and spend time after work, in the evening, on her hobby.

Sometimes a scheme or fragment of it is extremely difficult: when you thread the thread, you make three or four crosses and you have to change the color again: “Or there are only three crosses of the same color in the whole scheme.”
“Now I don’t, but I used to embroider until four thirty in the morning. I knit the thread on the needle for about ten minutes and I don’t understand why I don’t. It turns out that it does not have that purpose. Now I try not to do it, because the night is to rest ”, said the interlocutor.
As for the whole, the framing of the image is also important: “There are wonderful people in Panevėžys -“ The world of frames ”. I am grateful to them, because there are artists who work there who come close and fit into the framework ”.
“What if I wanted to buy your painting?” I ask Audronė, and she says she has never thought about it.
“How much would it cost? I couldn’t even answer. Now only a few friends hinted at it, let’s say how many walls do you have in your house? You won’t snag everyone. I don’t know. Cost is only about 500 euros. Materials, framed. And about a year and a half of intensive work. I couldn’t really tell the price. “
I got a call from the museum.
Until this year, all six paintings were in Audronė’s house: “Every morning and every night, say goodbye and say goodbye. You get positive emotions. “
“I have not shown these paintings to anyone before because I had no idea that anyone was interested in them. They delighted the family, the loved ones. Only a few friends said it was selfish, because I don’t show it to anyone, “said A. Zupkienė.
Once a family friend asked if he could take pictures of Audronė’s work. He also mentioned the museum, but Audronė simply passed the idea through his ears.
“I remember my husband and I walked in the woods before Christmas. And then the museum director Daina Kamarauskienė called me. I had a surprise, a Christmas present! I wanted to see the photos.
It all took a while, but in the end we agreed on an exhibition. I’m glad to see that people are interested, it’s good that they appreciate it, ”said Audronė.
