“Clinical trials of AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford’s AZD1222 coronavirus vaccine were resumed in the UK after the Medicines and Health Regulatory Agency (MHRA) confirmed it was safe to do so,” the company said in a statement. .
AstraZeneca voluntarily suspended randomized clinical trials of its COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday due to unexplained ailments in a volunteer.
An independent committee was set up to monitor the safety of the vaccine being developed, but the company said it was “normal procedure” to ensure fair testing.
The committee “completed the studies and made recommendations to the MHRA that it is safe to reopen the studies in the UK,” AstraZeneca reported.
AstraZeneca is among nine companies currently in the final stages of testing vaccines in development.
In the United States, AstraZeneca began enrolling 30,000 volunteers at dozens of locations on Aug. 31, and in Brazil and other parts of South America, the vaccines are being tested in smaller groups.
“AstraZeneca is committed to ensuring the safety of study participants and the highest standards of conduct in clinical trials,” the company said in a statement.
“The company will continue to work with healthcare institutions around the world to follow the recommendations when other clinical trials can be resumed to distribute the vaccine on a large scale, fairly, and on a non-profit basis during this pandemic,” added AstraZeneca.
