Arvydas Sabonis will lead the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) for another year.

Sabonis’ tenure was due to end after this year’s Tokyo Olympics, but with the postponement of one of the biggest sporting events for 2021, the LKF president’s plans also changed. He confirmed this by video call to members of the LKF Executive Committee who met in Kaunas on Tuesday.

“We asked about the continuation of Arvydas’ career and received a positive response from him, we want to be happy.” Now we will need a (conference) word of conference, ”said Mindaugas Špokas, LKF Secretary General, after the LKF Executive Committee meeting.

A conference uniting all LKF members and a vote on the extension of Sabonis’ mandate will be held on September 8.

Sabonis himself did not attend the meeting held at LKF headquarters on Tuesday while recovering after the operation.

“Everything is fine, healthy and alive,” said LKL President Remigijus Milašius, who participated in the press conference together with Špokas.

Sabonis has been LKF President since 2011. During this period, the Lithuanian men’s basketball team twice won silver medals in the European Championship. 2012 and 2016 finished the quarterfinals at the 2014 Olympic Games and in 2014. In the world championship he remained fourth, when in 2019. he completed the performance in the second group stage.

Along with Sabonis, the candidacy of coaches for the men’s and women’s national teams will be extended.

“An Olympic cycle was agreed with Darius (Maskoliūnas), so he did not interrupt, he moved the following year. No member of the executive committee sees any point in changing something, therefore, both Mantas Šernius and Maskoliūnas will continue to work,” he said. Špokas.

The men’s team will meet at the camp in Palanga on July 10, and the women’s team will start the camp on July 27.

Training camps for 14, 15 and 16 year old youth teams are planned in August.

Tuesday’s Executive Committee meeting also decided to end the student league (MKL) fights. Places in this league are set at intervals, no winners will be awarded.

The Marijampolė “Ataka” club and the players association were admitted to LKF members on Tuesday.
