“The enemies of Afghanistan and education … have entered Kabul University,” Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian told reporters. – The security forces are trying to control the situation. They are careful not to hurt the students. “

Afghan media reports say unknown individuals detonated several explosive devices and entered the Law School building.

The Taliban have said they are not involved in the incident, but in recent years several educational centers have been repeatedly attacked by extremist groups such as the Islamic State (IS) jihadist movement.

The latest incident came in preparation for the opening of an Iranian book fair at Kabul University, said Hamid Obaidi, a spokesman for the Higher Education Ministry. A number of high-ranking government officials are expected to attend the opening ceremony, including Vice President Amrullah Saleh, who has been repeatedly targeted.

Health Ministry spokeswoman Masooma Jafari told AFP that eight injured, including students and teachers, were taken to hospital, but the numbers are likely to continue to rise.

The students said there was a lot of confusion when they heard the shots.

“While we were studying in the auditoriums, we suddenly heard gunshots at the university,” said Fraidoon Ahmadi, a 23-year-old student. “Some university students escaped … The situation is chaotic, that’s why the students are afraid.”

Ahmadi added that, along with several other students, he was trapped for more than two hours before being rescued.

“We were very scared and we thought that this day could be the last of our lives … The children were screaming, praying and asking for help,” he said.

“I have no words to say how we survived today’s armed attack on our university,” Ahmadi said, adding that there are around 800 students in the Faculty of Social Sciences alone.

At least 24 people were killed last week in a deadly bomb attack on an educational facility in Kabul’s western district. The IS was responsible for this attack.

In 2018, another Islamic State assassin exploded near Kabul University, killing dozens of people, mostly teenagers.

In 2016, 16 people were killed when militants stormed an American university in Afghanistan.
