Following the departure of the mayor of Akmenė, two MEPs, Vilija Blinkevičiūtė and Juozas Olekas, will compete for the presidency of the LSDP. To the latter, according to V. Mitrofanov, who announced his decision on Facebook, he will give his support.

On his Facebook account, the mayor explained that he was logically withdrawing from the elections.

“I believe that, considering the period of the pandemic, the risks, the circumstances and characteristics of the organization of the elections, protecting the health of all, saving time and financial and human resources of the party, it would be correct to choose a party president first round, “wrote the politician. Furthermore, according to him, when L. Gudžinskas withdrew from the elections and expressed his support for V. Blinkevičiūtė, the elections “were no longer equal”. Therefore, assures V. Mitrofanov, he will continue to support J. Olek in the elections.

“I will support and support Juozas Olekas. I am invited to be part of the Juozas team, so I believe that my personal experience, skills, observations and suggestions can help the party to recover, regain the faith and trust of the people,” he wrote Mayor.

ELTA recalls that the election of the president of the LSDP will take place from May 3 to 9.
The president of the LSDP is elected by all party members for a two-year term. He will be elected directly for the third time. Until 2017, LSDP presidents were elected at congresses.
