Anomalous Summer 2020: Scientists Promise This Year Will Still Surprise

Records of this type are already becoming a sad tradition: 19 of the last 20 years are in the top twenty, and in the last 6 years they are in the top six on this list. Judging from the current situation, there will be seven out of seven in a few months.

According to scientists, these trends only confirm the accelerated warming of the climate. This means that climate change will not be avoided with the previous plan, which has been endorsed by almost every country in the world and will have to be modified.

However, time is not very grateful for this: the coronavirus pandemic threatens the world with a great economic crisis, and the ideas of the Greens are returning to secondary issues in all countries.

July 2020 became one of the three warmest since 1880: the average temperature of the earth’s surface and the oceans was almost all higher than in the 20th century. average.

“These are not the records we should aspire to,” said GR King, spokesperson for the World Wildlife Fund. “The tropical heat may seem tempting to people in countries like Britain, but it is actually a stark reminder of the planet’s climate crisis.”

Nine of the record 10 months in July have been in the last decade.

Extreme heat is not pleasant for many reasons. First of all, it is deadly. According to the Royal British Weather Service, heat has killed more people than any other weather phenomenon in recent years.

Due to the increase in the temperature of the soil surface, the soils dry out and melt the ice. In July this year, Arctic glacier coverage was a quarter lower than the average for the past 40 years and the lowest during the entire observation period.

Over the years, glaciers the size of Polish territory have melted in the Arctic. Over the past 45 years, ice volumes have been reduced by two-thirds, and at this rate, by the middle of this century, the northern marine glaciers will not remain complete.

This year, the hurricane season started unusually early, with nine “nominal” storms in the tropics in July, a record for mid-summer.

Strong winds at the equator indicate that a La Niña phenomenon can be expected this year, when the Pacific temperature drops and the Atlantic Ocean warms. American scientists predict between 19 and 25 powerful cyclones instead of the usual 12. Even 7-11 of them could become hurricanes, and 3-6 could become extremely strong tornadoes.

Droughts and floods in Europe

Half of Europe suffered from the heat in July and banned watering of gardens until the other half got soaked in flooded settlements and put on warmer clothes.

In Finland, it was raining twice as much as usual and it was 1-2 degrees cooler, while Portugal survived the hottest July of 90 years of observation, France, since 1959, the researchers report.

This is exactly what dangerous global warming is, which scientists have long and unanimously warned about: sudden fluctuations in temperature and humidity, natural cataclysms, and the transformation of climate from predictable to extreme.

The relative humidity on our planet has been decreasing for the last 40 years and this is not a problem of lack of rain, but the fact that the air above the earth is warming faster and faster and the difference with the temperature of the surface of the oceans is growing, scientists say.

Deviations from the norm not only increase, but also last for longer and longer periods. Europe has suffered a dry summer for the third year in a row, in response to national economies and returns.

For the first time in 250 years, Europe is experiencing two consecutive droughts, the BBC reports. And scientists warn that the recurrence of such a scenario will only increase in the future, precisely due to human activity.

XXI a. Periods of drought in Europe became more frequent, and already in 2003 the region experienced a catastrophe worthy of Biblical history, which has affected humanity for several hundred years. The economic damage from such droughts is estimated at $ 100 billion. euros.

The main loss is due to lower yields and lower exports. Even this year, after barely regaining Russia’s first place in the world in terms of grain exports, the European Union soon abandoned it due to prolonged droughts and floods. France, Europe’s largest grain exporter, will double its exports and even a good harvest in Poland and the Baltic countries will not make up for these losses and the loss of market share.

Russia, Canada and Australia have had record years of good harvests, Bloomberg reports.

Fires and Hell in America

A situation similar to that of Europe emerged on the other side of the Atlantic. The southwestern US literally bakes in the sun, and the central part of the state is often awash in rain.

This is most evident in California. Initially, the previous heat record in this state improved there: the temperature recorded in Death Valley reached + 54.4 ° C. And then the electrical supply began to fail: refrigerators, fans and air conditioners “hacked” electrical networks.

Not only that, this state is constantly ravaged by huge wildfires. The area of burning forests grows 40% every decade.

2020 could be a record year

Not only is the weather getting extreme in the summer, but all of 2020 is marked by weather anomalies that are already slowly becoming the norm. In January-July, the planet warms 1.05 ° C higher than average, the second result since 2016, when the Earth warmed 1.09 ° C. Both Europe and Asia have “improved” temperature records.

American scientists predict that 2020 will be in the top five in the last 141 years (of observation). Even 75 percent. the precision forecast announces that this year will be a record for the entire period.

It is almost impossible to wait for help from natural phenomena: Scientists unanimously claim that the only way to stop global warming is to reduce the release of pollutants into the atmosphere. Otherwise, the heat will only increase, according to a report from the Royal British Meteorological Service. Scientists have found that if the current situation on Earth continues and temperatures rise at the same rate, 40 degrees of heat will be recorded in Britain every three and a half years as early as 2100, instead of the previous 100-300 years.

Scientists even suggest starting to give heat anomalous names, as is the case with severe hurricanes: after all, they happen more and more frequently and kill many more people.
