The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has heard an appeal filed by the Russians against the country’s four-year disqualification from all major sporting events in the world. After the investigation, the CAS representatives concluded that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) had not complied with the Global Anti-Doping Code, but decided to reduce the disqualification from 4 to 2 years. It is true that due to some of the changes made, the disqualification did not officially take effect until 2020. December 17 and power until 2022. December 16, so Russia did not get much from such a decision.

Russia will still have to get through 2021. Tokyo Summer Olympics, 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and 2022 soccer world championships. Some of the country’s athletes are likely to be able to attend these events as neutral athletes, but they will not be able to officially represent Russia, wear clothing with the country’s symbols, and will be prohibited from displaying the Russian flag and playing the country’s anthem. Next year’s European Football Championship, which Russia itself is preparing to organize, was not on the ban list because it is not a world event, but a continental one.

Under the new sanctions, the most influential representatives of the Russian authorities will not be able to appear at major sporting events for two years. Among them is the president of the country Vladimir Putin. Russians preparing to appeal are reportedly outraged.

“It just came to our attention then. Too much, all limits have been exceeded. There is no doubt that we will appeal. We will not allow our rights to be undermined and ignored,” said a spokesman for the Council of the Russian Federation, Sport Express. Vladimir Jabarov.

The Russian sports world has reacted ambiguously to the sanctions. They were delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the Olympics as neutral athletes and would try to circumvent the ban on Russian symbols in other ways.

“Of course, not having the flag of our country at the Olympic Games will be an insult to everyone, but the most important thing will be to get on the Olympic podium, and there we will be able to sing the Russian national anthem,” said the coach of the practically invincible Russian figure swimming. Tatiana Pokrovskaya.
