The Klaipėda Neptūnas, which is registering the rise in the Huawei Women’s League, gained momentum. The coach’s position was shaken by the change. After the team initially suspended and later stopped working with Dalius Ubartas, Andra Gabalytė took over the leadership of the club, leading Neptūnas to six wins in eight meetings.

Two of them are of special importance against Kaunas Aistes-LSMU. The first became historic, winning the first time against Kaunas overall, and the second allowed to gain an advantage against Šiauliai in the fight for third place.

For comparison, Neptūnas de Ubartas, who has led since the beginning of the season, won four times in the same stage.

“Of course, first of all, the wins are rewarding, because it really elevates the mental state of the team,” Gabalytė told the website “Moterulyga.lt”. – I am also proud of the girls who show character, desire to work in training and win. I hope that success continues to accompany us this season and we achieve good results ”.

Gabalytė, who is the acting coach for the second consecutive season, has improved in the last two months in 2019-2020. personal result, when his trained “Neptune” had won four times in 11 rounds before the end of the season.

The Klaipeda club was already well behind second place and took third place. This year the situation is much better.

“Neptūnas” (10-6) against “Šiauliai” (9-9) leads by a win, mutual advantage and has played two games less. Klaipėdietė’s latest landslide victory (79:58) against Aistes-LSMU (11-4) earned the series lead in four laps but lagged behind by a win. In addition, the one led by Rokas Kondratavičius stopped playing one more game.

The Klaipėda club is partly on Gabalytė’s shoulders not only leading close to the sideline, but also in controlling the game on the field.

Even a Klaipėda woman competing in season 19 distributes an average of 4.5 results and is in third position in the Huawei Women’s League according to this indicator.

The incessant Gabalytė plays this season for 29 minutes, earning 8.4 points, recovering 5.8 and getting 1.5 balls each, and generating 12.5 utility points.

During the remaining four rounds of the regular season, Neptūnas will face two battles with the undefeated Vilnius Kibirkštimi-MRU and a showdown with LCC International University and Vilnius Kibirkštimi-VKM.

Gabalytė contacted the website “Moterulyga.lt” about the rise of “Neptūnas”, the unity in the team, the coach’s profile and the iron stamina.

– How did you manage to unite the team?
– The changes are twofold: for better or for worse. I am glad that everything has gone in the right direction. I feel the confidence of the panels, who as a coach are very happy in this case. You can do a lot with confidence. This is the engine of the team: they both trust each other and a great indoor environment. We are a united team both in the training process and beyond. The panels came together like a fist. I can’t want anything more.

– How much did you, as a beginner coach, help the failed stage of the first half of the season to learn from the situation in the team?
– I learn more from my own experience, I have really played for more than one coach, I have come a short way and I have a lot of luggage. Before starting a coaching career, I had made decisions myself about which coaching qualities I liked and which I didn’t. Still, it’s women’s basketball, our psychology is a bit different than men’s. Now, as a coach, I try to be guided by my knowledge about what I have obtained from my own coaches.

– How do you see your profile and work methodology as a coach?
– I understood one thing: shouting, threats, epithets do not lead to good. That is my opinion, but every coach is different. I’m not saying anything, screaming can be achieved (the result), but at what cost? For me, a disciplined methodology is more acceptable when it is clear what is expected of the players, of the team in general, and what the objectives are. And hard work adds to all of that. My priorities are what I want to follow. Of course, psychology always has its own influence, it is necessary to know how to approach each player. It’s not easy, I still need experience, but every day I try to do something good, I learn and improve.

– In the tournament table we managed to place ourselves in third position, which would lead to Kaunas “Aistės-LSMU” in the semifinal series. You won the last two times against Kaunas. How much equipment inspires such results?
– When we were preparing for the match with “Šiauliai” and “Aistės-LSMU”, I told the ladies that this is the most important of our fights lately, because it determines the place of our ranking. Vilnius “Kibirkštis-MRU” is a well-equipped team and to bite it, we have to play unreal matches, and they are the worst. We understand the situation and third place inspires us to have a more realistic opportunity to fight for higher places.

Each victory adds confidence and motivation to each player and to the team in general. Everyone sees that it is real and possible to win against Aistes-LSMU. Especially now that the season is coming to an end, this gives us an extra boost. Of course, only if we keep working hard this season can we achieve anything.

– Dalia Donskichytė has shone since mid-season, Ligita Tamutytė has also become a strong pillar. What pleasantly surprises you about your students?
– I’m not surprised, because we have played with Ligita many seasons, I also knew Dalia from before, I had to play against her, others are also well known players. Maybe I lost playing with Gintare (Paulauskaite), but I played against her. I really knew the advantages of all panels and to surprise someone it wasn’t because I always believed they could. Sometimes you just need to carry them that way – a clear outline of the game and just confidence. When you are confident, feel the confidence of the team and the coaches, you can participate in the mountain. Our turnover is not high. Something you can see pros and cons. To this day, I will watch the pros because the ladies know they will play, they may not feel the pressure to sit on a bench if they fail.

– What do you intend to contribute to the team game every time you cross the sideline and you no longer have the role of observer?
– First of all, peace, because sometimes from the great desire of youth solutions can emerge both for exhaustion and for children. I fully understand this myself and remind myself (at this age). But I want our game to be more mature, for our basketball to be smarter, that’s why I try to demand it as much as possible both in training and in games.

– Regarding your personal minutes on the field, you play one minute more than last year (2019-2020 – 28 minutes on average, 29-20 minutes in 2020-2021). How do you feel when sometimes you have to play for more than 30 minutes?
– I always felt great (smiles). I’m not saying it’s easy, certainly not always. Maybe you need to start playing less, but I’ve always been a maximalist … Apparently, that still doesn’t let me. Maybe next season you won’t have to play at all, you’ll have to transfer the minutes to someone else. Clearly, recovery is not as fast anymore, it takes more time. The body, as I say, is not there yet, so I can be happy about that.

– How do you rate your progress, man? as a coach are you going for a second season?
– The start of the first season was very stressful as I was never a coach. I admit, it was a lot of stress: how to organize work, how to organize. This season was already much calmer, I knew how to make plans, trainings. There is still a lot to improve and I know my weaknesses. When there is not much experience, especially in stressful situations, then you find yourself in need of quick decisions. But again, it comes with experience. On top of all that, I keep playing, so there is fatigue and sometimes I don’t think more properly. I think things will be easier if that happens, which I don’t know yet, when I’m just a coach. Then things will look even better and it will be much easier to improve when you do just those tasks.

– Neptune’s rotation is in several key players. How satisfied are you with the inclusion of young players in the organization?
– It is definitely not easy to this day and I will not say that I am satisfied with the situation. Another women’s league team opens in Klaipeda, made up of young players, who are taken out of a sports school. Therefore, we only have a few players from the basketball school. The situation is not easy, with the players it is definitely not easy and anyway in women’s basketball there are no options to choose that help. The question is how we will take care of everything. At the beginning of the season, Dalius Ubartas was interested in this situation, so I cannot comment much on this season. Generally, there aren’t many girls who want to play basketball, and you could get reinforcements from that, and another team in town is playing in the top league. This further reduces the opportunities.
