PHOTO GALLERY. Alytus resident with movement disorder: “No need to rule out a person with a disability”

She says she never kept the disability a secret: “I have never hidden and will not hide my disability because I walk differently from others. It is visible to anyone else to fool. I don’t even pay attention if someone is watching, I go and go where I need to. “

Speak positively about the disorder.

She talks about disability on the bright side and mentions that the experiences helped her discover herself, optimism and determination. It is true that disability had to be tamed and lived with; That attitude only came with time.

“At first, the reconciliation itself was very difficult, I really had to go through too much and see everything so that now I could speak and feel so positive. For me, experience and life have helped me to become who I am now. All my life I was not only positive and optimistic, there were difficult days. Only by accepting myself and realizing that I can be what I want, have I become what I am now, ”says Indrė.

The environment, family, friends and positive people, help to discover determination and strength. The interlocutor is glad that she has been surrounded by kind people since she was little who accepted and supported her.

“I have extremely strong support from friends and family, there were times when I visited a psychologist and there is nothing wrong with that. I think it helped me to know and accept myself. I always grew up surrounded by healthy people, but there were no cases in The ones who would make fun of me for being crooked or something.

Attitudes towards people with disabilities are changing at all now, and perhaps this makes it a bit easier because it is now more visible, accessible and understandable. But everything, I think, begins and is in our minds. When you think about yourself, that’s the way it will be ”, he says about the experience.

People around you see you as a healthy personality

The girl says that for a person who has difficulty walking, stairs or entrances are not yet adequately adapted in some public places.

“There is still a lack of adaptation of people with disabilities when it comes to going to public places. Somewhere and high curbs, ladders. Of course, when those adaptation efforts are not done to the fullest, the handicap ramps are too steep, a person can simply deviate from them.

I have never had any relief from people to provide me with something here. Now everyone sees me as a healthy personality; yes, I may not participate in sports competitions, but whatever work or project you propose to me is done, ”he says.

The girl loves to travel and has now started volunteering at the Alytus City Community Center, where she works with youth. She says that young people increasingly accept others as they are:

“I started volunteering this year and this activity is driving me crazy. I probably discovered an area where I could fulfill myself. I was such a lost person and I didn’t even know what I liked. Volunteering is now my main driving force and activity. I was really very well received by the young people there. It is another great example that young people now understand and accept you as you are and do not dismiss you because of a disability. “

Not enough talk about disability

When asked if he hears enough stories or shares with others about disability, Indre admits there could be more. She thinks that the lack of examples for others is that they are not so alone:

“I think there are not enough people talking about disability yet, there is a lack of greater adaptation and support. It goes without saying that if you are already a person with a disability, it means that you cannot study, work or not even realize yourself. You can do everything, you may need a different adaptation, a different support, but you really need to talk about it. Now I see more and more people with disabilities integrate into healthy people. The more this is done, the more the world will understand.

It will be easier for the healthy and the disabled to communicate. I don’t think people with disabilities dare to talk about it now, maybe they lack support. “
