Air pollution is likely to remain elevated on Friday

Although light showers are expected in the afternoon, winds from the southeast will increase and PM10 concentrations may decrease slightly, but its daily limit value will likely be exceeded.

On Thursday, air quality measurement stations registered an increase in air pollution with these particles throughout the country. Its average daily concentration in Vilnius was 131-147 / g / cubic meter. m, Kaunas – 134-149 µg / cu. m, in Klaipeda – 95-136 µg / cubic meter. m, in other cities it ranged between 76 and 139 µg / cubic meter. m and exceeded the daily limit value (50 µg / cubic m) up to 3 times.

According to the EPA, the main reasons for the increase in this pollution are the prevailing unfavorable weather conditions (dry weather, light wind), the impact of local sources: transportation, increased pollution on air quality and pollutants imported from neighboring countries. Air flows from the southeast and east predominate, and along with them, pollutants reach Lithuania from southwestern Russia, southeastern Ukraine, where, according to satellite information, many forest fires are recorded.

According to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, this week the country will be dominated by winds from the southeast and east, no significant rains are expected, so the situation is likely to change little in the coming days.

Municipalities are encouraged to water surfaces, especially construction sites and streets and curbs, to limit outdoor physical activity.
Pollution in Klaipeda exceeds standards more than 3 times
Air quality measurement stations in the city of Klaipeda record a very high exceedance of the daily norm for particulate matter, reports the Klaipeda City Public Health Office. The average daily limit value for particles in the air is 50 mg / cubic meter. m, while on Friday at the Šilutė motorway stop 176.11 mg / cubic meter was recorded. m concentration, the station in the old town fixed 125.76 mg / cubic meter. m concentration.

With a dry and calm climate, air pollution in the city increases and pollutants accumulate in the air from the ground. Part of the pollutants are transferred from other European regions to the south and southeast.
Today, the highest concentrations of pollutants are also likely to be found near busy streets, in those parts of the city where road construction and repair is taking place.
