Air pollution has increased in Lithuania: big cities suffer the most

As the cold and the inhabitants of the town get hotter and hotter, not only the smell of delicates touches the nose, but also increases air pollution. Here’s what residents say:

“We opened the house to ventilate and quickly had to close the windows because there was a smell of good, or as it was called, burning in the house.”

“I don’t know, but the smell is really unpleasant.”

“Unpleasant smell. Reminiscent of the subtle, something like that.”

Residents of the Petrašiūnai district, located in a ravine, are likely to smell unpleasant smells in Kaunas. And the red markers on the Lithuanian map record that air pollution with particulate matter is increasing threateningly in the largest cities – Vilnius, Kaunas, Šiauliai and Panevėžys.

“In four cities, the highest concentration was registered in Šiauliai and Panevėžys, there it exceeded the limit value one and a half times,” says Vilma Bimbaitė, representative of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The average concentration of particulate matter in the air is not required to exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter, and these days it is approaching 80. Smoke from chimneys still mixes with car exhaust.

“All the pollutants, so to speak, have been accumulating in the ground air since Friday, because there is absolutely no dispersal and the pollutants do not disperse in the higher layers of the atmosphere. Such conditions – cold, calm, no precipitation “, – says V. Bimbaitė.

And Paul from Kaunas is just chopping wood and running to warm up. Prefers natural wood.

“We ourselves breathe that air, we put only what is clean, from the forest: birch, oak,” says Paulius Linkevičius, a resident of Kaunas.

“It is relatively firewood and charcoal, firewood is a much cleaner fuel,” said V. Bimbaitė.

Unfortunately, Lithuanians still heat up painted stoves and boards, old lacquered furniture and others get hot with even more harmful waste:

“There is, I know, one where he puts, cuts tires, and shoots at night when nobody sees him.”

“Do you smell some kind of unpleasant rag smell?”

As a result, air pollution is increasing in some places, which is extremely harmful to health: airborne particles can even cause cancer.

“According to the World Health Organization, this may be related to cancer. It can also enter the lungs, the circulatory system, accumulate in the lung tissues and cause serious respiratory and cardiovascular disorders,” says Kamilė Klepeckienė, a public health specialist .

Therefore, when particulate pollution increases, people are advised to be outdoors as little as possible. Although, as the experts pointed out, the quarantine in this case benefits: the masks protect against air pollution and the restriction of movement has reduced the number of cars on the streets, so the concentration of pollutants is not increasing as fast.

And Kaunas is currently implementing a new air quality measurement system: twenty devices will measure air pollution in the city.

“We will measure air quality with new, modern and autonomous operating meters. This will give a more complete picture of air quality in the city and will make timely decisions. Both in the regulation of flows and in some type of development”, said Jurga Pakrosnienė, specialist from the Department of Environmental Protection.

Experts predict that the critical situation due to contamination will continue for several days. As the wind intensifies Wednesday night, the concentration of particles in the air will begin to disperse.
