S. Mikoliūnas played for many years with Marius Žaliūkas in the Lithuanian national team and in Scotland, at the Hearts club in Edinburgh, their paths also crossed briefly during the initial period of his career in Kaunas and towards the end of his career in Vilnius.
The last time Žalgiris won the champion title was in 2016, when S. Mikoliūnas and M. Žaliūkas played together on the same team. However, Marius did not see the victory of the Vilnius team: he left Anapilin on October 31. – the same day the golden match was scheduled.
“It just came to our knowledge then. Recently, as you know, my very good friend Marius Žaliūkas went to another world. He also wanted to give him that trophy,” said S. Mikoliūnas, who found it difficult to gather words and contain emotions after the match.
At the same time, the 36-year-old coach looked positively to the future: “I am very happy to be champion again. After a long break we will be able to participate in the Champions League. We wait with great positivity and desire. “
Another seasoned “wolf” of the team, Serbian legionnaire Andrija Kaludžerovičis became something of a success factor: he returned to the team this year after a 4-year hiatus. Although the forward won the title of the most productive at that time, this time he was even happier with the title.
“It is a wonderful, wonderful feeling. Much better than four years ago when I also won the champion title. Now it was much more difficult because we had one point less everything was decided in the last game. There was a lot of pressure before the game, ”said the footballer.
“Nothing is difficult when you are like a fist,” added Croatian Mark Karamarkas as he approached the Serbian on team unity.
After the match, A. Kaludžerovičius was one of the first to cross the podium and the barriers that separated the square and ran to the fence of the stadium, where the most loyal supporters of “Žalgiris” had gathered, who could not enter the match due to quarantine restrictions. They showed their support both the day before the decisive duel, as well as by meeting with the incoming team and singing throughout the meeting.
“We deserved to win, this club deserved it, the fans for their support. We really deserved it and we showed on the field that we were a better team this season,” said the footballer.
Several Žalgiris champions won the title for the first time. One of them is defender Domantas Šimkus.
“An indescribable feeling. Very very funny. We really wanted it to come, the whole season was tough. Such a dessert is a victory in the last match. We are very happy. The season was good for us, we played well, we showed good football. It’s a shame, I just didn’t manage to win the cup.
The victory earned Žalgiris not only the champion title: next season the team will compete again in the UEFA Champions League national team competition.
