“My friends and I heard the first vague rescue call after navigation. We did not understand. We started looking that way. We saw that the girl was distracted, looking down … When she asked for help again, we ran without expecting anything , we got on the pontoon and rushed to help.

The woman on the shore said her sister fell into the water. In the water we find a woman lying without signs of life. My friend and I took it out and started doing artificial respiration, “said one of the heroes, the sailor Audrius, adding that he had to save a man for the first time in his life.

As soon as the woman was removed, an ambulance was called. According to the sailor, after artificial respiration, the woman began to breathe. She was lying on her side but did not regain consciousness.

“It just came to our notice then. We asked for help, we got an ambulance. The drowning woman’s sister said she was celebrating her birthday. But, if I’m not mistaken, this is not the first such case in Klaipeda. It would be. possible to think about installing fences in that place, ”said Audrius.

The woman in the water is currently in the hospital, she has already regained consciousness. However, the victim’s sister, Brigita, did not hide her concern from the Western Express that the fight against the unknown had not yet been won.

“My sister is regaining consciousness, she has come out of the coma. However, it is not yet clear if there will be consequences or not. First of all, the sister’s health. According to her, it would be possible to think of safer partitions in the castle harbor, because children are often in danger in this place too.

“The imagination of designers can be endless. Has the focus at least been on safety? It really is not safe there. A 9-year-old boy already fell there. I hold my own son like a baby by the hand, afraid to run.

Call for caution

According to Snieguolė Stripinienė, architect at UAB Uostamiesčio projekts, the issue of safety was raised before the reconstruction of the docks of the castle harbor.

He assured that precautions should have been taken after warning that the berths had been repaired, as this was probably almost the only preventive measure to avoid disasters.

“It was a dock project. Barriers are an integral part of it. In fact, there are many ports where there are no barriers.

In one particular case, the partitions are symbolic for a person to see them visually. There should be warning signs in that place.

This was discussed with the Klaipėda municipality, ”S. Stripinienė shared his memories.

He recalled incidents abroad in which people had a similar sense of self-neglect.

“I know that in another country, a woman fell while speaking or writing on the phone. Other ports often have no barriers. But there is already such a disaster, which happens very rarely. The problem is that you cannot swing or lean on those ropes, because those supports are definitely not made for that, ”said the architect.

He added that there was also a lot of discussion about safety on the embankments of the Dangė River. After some rebuilding, some may run out of supports.

“The objective was to adapt the berths of the ships to dock. It was proposed not to install any supports, as this is better for boats. If the barriers were beyond, people would not be able to access the river. Again, the problem.

Fences won’t solve the problem?

According to architect Edmund Beneet, in fact, people should protect themselves and others more. He doubts that the huge fences would help prevent disasters.

“I am not sure that my opinion is very popular. I think our berths are quite tidy. I can only rely on my life and work practices, analogous that I have seen in the Baltic Sea ports and in Australia. In principle, the equipment and the safety of our moorings are no different. The most important thing is safe behavior, whether on a pier or on the Šilutė highway. If we stumble across the street and end up in the driveway? How will this end? the embankment, the same.

No one else will take care of our safety more than ourselves. You must act responsibly and safely, both for yourself and for others. If we don’t, fences and barriers won’t help. And accidents happen everywhere. After all, you can also find a scooter on the pedestrian path ”, assured E. Benetis. The architect, who expressed his condolences to the victim, has no doubts that it is important to solve this particular accident. Perhaps discovering who was to blame for this situation could lead to some conclusions. “We need to clarify other circumstances as to whether our barriers are to blame. Perhaps there were other reasons? We must look again at what has not been done, who is to blame and say it out loud to the public,” said the architect.

Everyone should probably remember this, especially when it comes to children.

That discussion is ongoing. There is a group that says unconditionally that the berths cannot be a kind of fence that recalls a dictatorial country. Others say that there should be restricted sections on the railings. There is no unequivocal opinion. I look at it, if you take care of yourself and are attentive, you won’t need a fence either. If you have no sense of care or responsibility, if you have lost vigilance, no fence will help you.

There is no fence guard, people guard. There are many massive events: Sea Festival, Ship Parade. Masses of people walk the same roads and safety is not forgotten. I really sincerely sympathize with the man who suffered such a disaster. But for that, closing all access … We will not cover everything. This is not the only reason why there are no more cases of this type. I repeat, we must first take care of ourselves. The minimum fences are, maybe they could be different.
