Rector of the University of Klaipeda prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas addresses the academic community, urging them to be responsible and refrain from participating in gatherings and celebrations, thus reducing the risk of the spread of the coronavirus. Due to the party organized by the ERASMUS international mobility program, the University staff already have to organize assistance to their participants infected with COVID-19.
It turned out that young people from abroad studying at various colleges in the port city organized the Halloween celebration in the city together. The organization of such an event at the University of Klaipeda was rejected due to the existing preventive restrictions. After the party in the city, some participants experienced symptoms of coronavirus: fever, loss of taste or smell. The coordinator of the international mobility program at the University of Klaipeda was briefed on the weekend. After testing, the coronavirus was confirmed for ten participants of the ERASMUS mobility program studying at the University of Klaipeda.
All of them are isolated in specially conditioned rooms, their health is monitored and they are contacted before they experience symptoms. The infected had no contact at the University.
KU executives say the case only once again demonstrates the importance of following the recommendations of epidemiologists in a pandemic setting and avoiding further gatherings and celebrations that increase the risk of spreading the virus.
“With Lithuanian epidemiological indicators deteriorating, we have taken all risk mitigation measures at Klaipeda University: planned events are postponed, lectures that can be read remotely are held in a virtual environment, advises professors and students doing laboratory work to carefully observe security requirements, restricted access to University departments. We look forward to the understanding and responsibility of the community to protect ourselves and others, “says KU Rector Prof. Dr. A. Razbadauskas.
Last day, 639 cases were registered in Lithuania. A total of 18,000 people in Lithuania have been infected with the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. 92 people, 12 thousand. 765 – still ill, 5082 – recovered.
