Western countries must act, not speak, Khodorkovsky told Reuters in London on Monday. Only then will they put pressure on the leaders in Moscow after the arrest of Kremlin critic Alexei Navaln.
Sanctions are to be announced for Russians involved in the development of Russian corruption networks around the world. According to Khodorkovsky, this makes more sense than applying it to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which is supposed to flow Russian gas to Germany and other countries.
Navaln was sentenced by a Russian court to 30 days in prison on Monday, a day after returning to Moscow. He is accused of violating the conditions of probation.
Commenting on this, M. Khodorkovsky said: “A. Navaln’s arrest means that Putin’s regime, his bandit regime, is using totalitarian methods to put pressure on society. “
Khodorkovsky called Russian President Vladimir Putin an “aging autocrat.” „V. Putin feels he needs to show that he is the most important of the pack, he said. “Or these people will think he’s not the strongest anymore.”
Khodorkovsky, now 57, was once the richest man in Russia. He was among the oligarchs who had accumulated enormous wealth during the chaos after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He later fought with President Putin and was arrested in 2003 for tax evasion. He entered the colony from which he was released in 2013. Khodorkovsky’s Yukos concern was destroyed.
