In addition, additional army and volunteer trainings are taking place throughout this week to involve more people in the process. epidemiological diagnostic tools. “Capacity building will allow even faster case investigations, which is crucial to controlling the spread of COVID-19,” the report said.

Scientists warn: strict quarantine is almost inevitable

Under the most pessimistic scenario, a strict quarantine may be necessary to control the spread of COVID-19 in early November, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) said on Tuesday, based on its own forecasts and those of the Institute. Lithuanian Energy (LEI).

According to scientists, the country is beginning to be dominated by uncontrolled outbreaks of infections, so the spread of the virus may exceed pessimistic forecasts.

After modeling possible cases, the researchers note that if the number of new infections increased by 5.8% every day, as in September, and 8% of all infected people were seriously hospitalized, quarantine measures should harden after late.

According to them, this is the only way to reduce the workload of medical institutions and ensure that COVID-19 patients do not occupy more than the thousand hospital beds currently planned across the country.

In the pessimistic scenario, this number of beds would be completely full already in the second half of November.

If 5% of all infected people were hospitalized, quarantine measures in the country should be introduced a little later, on November 12.

According to scientists, although more and more preventive measures are being introduced in Lithuania, there is a high probability that the spread of the infection will reach the level of the Czech Republic, where around 7% more new infections are detected every day.

In this case, the number of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients may be overcrowded earlier than planned.

The researchers note that today in hospitals in large cities, COVID-19 provides only 400 beds for patients, which can be filled earlier than in regions. Therefore, it is especially important to provide extra beds today, to reduce the social contacts of the population, to further establish contacts of the sick, if necessary, to self-isolate. It is also important to be responsible, use personal protective equipment and respect hygiene and distance.

If the prevailing trend of the epidemic prevailed in Lithuania in early October, if the number of new infections increased by 3% every day and hospitalized patients accounted for 8% of all infected people, stricter quarantine measures would be needed later, on December 15. If only 5% of all infected people were hospitalized, the quarantine would tighten just before the New Year, on December 31.

According to prediction scientists, it is not yet possible to accurately predict the future course of the pandemic in Lithuania; So far there are no models that can reliably predict the course of the pandemic in a week or later. In addition, much will depend on the decisions of the Government and the awareness and protection of the population.
