Protesters blocked a federal highway and set fire to Wendy’s, which killed Rayshard Brooks, 27, on Friday night, local media reported.

Earlier, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced the resignation of Police Chief Erika Shields.

According to an official report of the incident, Brooks fell asleep in his car in the parking lot of “Wendy’s” restaurant on Friday night, and restaurant staff called police to complain that he was disturbing other visitors.

After the test, police officers found him intoxicated and tried to arrest him, but he resisted, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

According to a video surveillance camera, “Brooks, who confronted police officers, received an electric shock from one of the officers and attempted to blow it up,” the report said.

“Officers began to chase R. Brooks and during these hunts R. Brooks turned around and directed an electric shock at the officer. The officer shot his gun and wounded Brooks.”

Brooks was taken to the hospital, but died after the operation, according to the report, which also indicates that one of the officers was injured.

An Atlanta police spokesman said the arrest was shot by police officer Garrett Rolfe. According to ABC News, he was fired on Saturday and a second official was transferred to administrative duties.

The incident came at a time when the United States was hit by historic mass protests against systemic racism, sparked by the death of another black man, George Floyd, as a result of police action on May 25.

Flyd died when a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his neck to his knee for nearly nine minutes.

The protests, which spread first in the country and then throughout the world, forced a debate on the legacy of slavery and colonialism, the violence of Caucasians against other races and the militarization of the American police.

E.Shields has worked at the Atlanta Police Department for more than two decades.

“In order to make Atlanta an example of the country, Shields offered to resign immediately as chief of police,” the mayor said on television.

“From deep … love for this city and this department, I have expressed my desire to resign the post of Chief of Police.” It is time for the city to move forward and create trust between the police and the communities it serves, ” Shields said in a statement.
