“I am pleased that an agreement has been reached and that it is possible to reach Neringa again by air, and eventually requests from foreign travelers to come to the complex by plane will be met,” says Darius Jasaitis, the mayor of Neringa.
The start of the Nida airport operation will be marked by the Aviation Festival, which will take place here on State Day, July 6. During it, it will be possible to see the performances of Jurgis Kairis and other masters of aviation sports.
After Nida’s outdoor site gained aerodrome status on Friday, it will be available to gliders, helicopters and light aircraft, the Neringa municipality announced.
Small planes will be able to land in Nida after a break of several years. This was allowed in 2016, but a year later an order from the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces entered into force restricting the flights of civil aircraft in the border area. This restriction has also been applied to the Nida field landing site.
Since the new order does not restrict flights in airfield air traffic zones, including in the border area, steps have been taken to change the state of the Nida site.
According to the municipality, to allow small aircraft to land in Nida again, the planned work in the forest management plan was carried out, the necessary markings were carried out, the equipment was installed, radio communication was installed and permission was requested from the Civil Aviation Department of the Transport Competition Agency to operate the aerodrome.
After the evaluation of the special requirements by the Commission, the Administration of the Municipality of Neringa has been granted an Aerodrome Certificate of Fitness, which means that the infrastructure in Nida meets the requirements for aerodromes and can be used for operations of civil aircraft.
