About 236 thousand people in Lithuania can already have immunity

Statistics Lithuania announces that nearly 6,000 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded in Lithuania in one form or another. Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys admits that the figures released to the public showed the true price of the pandemic.

Funeral director Šiauliai fears that not only last year, but also this year, more than one person who had coronavirus will have to be buried. One in four people buried had a diagnosis of Covid-19 and comorbidities.

“There were also coexistence, there were heart attacks, there were also oncological diseases, so they also died,” says Ričardas Ramanauskas, owner of the Norgailė funeral home.

The increase in deaths was recorded by employees of the Department of Pathology at Šiauliai Hospital in December last year. In November and December, nearly 60 percent more patients died at the hospital than in previous years. And although the number of deaths fluctuates slightly each year, the hospital pathologist has no doubt that such an increase in deaths is a consequence of the pandemic.

“The fluctuation is around 10 percent. Comparing 2019 and last year, this percentage is approximately 40. And I think that the COVID infection really affected the change in the number of these, ”says Vilija Niunevienė, pathologist.

The confusion that has existed so far in the coronavirus statistics has finally been cleared up and new pandemic-scale figures have been made available to the public. Statistics from Lithuania provided data from the main source, the electronic health system, and revealed the actual number of deaths.

A total of 3,013 people died from the coronavirus during the pandemic period, with COVID-19 being the main diagnosis. Adding to that number a couple thousand who were diagnosed with COVID19 but died from other causes, the number of coronavirus-related deaths rises to 5,192.

If you add up all the remaining people who died within 28 days of the coronavirus diagnosis, the death toll is approaching 6,000. Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys admits that Lithuania has already seen the true cost of a coronavirus pandemic.

“Yes, from this methodology it can be concluded that as many people as COVID died directly, almost a second died of those who were diagnosed with the disease but then developed other phenomena, but this was not accurately recorded”, Arūnas Dulkys.

Vaidotas Zemlys Balevičius, a data scientist and member of the Council of Health Experts, claims that recently released death statistics explain almost all of the excess deaths, which were not as high in Lithuania in previous years. In mid-December, the Department of Statistics announced excessive mortality in Lithuania. Excess deaths, as shown in this graph, have risen since October, increased in November, and peaked in December.

“Six thousand people who would not have died if it weren’t for Covid. When we look at the excess deaths now, that number explains all the excess deaths. Excessive deaths were known and there were around 6 thousand of them, that’s the number,” said Vaidotas Zemlys-Balevičius, Euromonitor’s data analyst.

The head of the Statistics Department even called December last year anomalous. The average number of deaths per month is usually 3.5 thousand, but in December there was a significant jump in deaths, almost 6 thousand people died per month. The Institute of Hygiene will report next week on the causes of the increase in mortality.

“The biggest anomalous month that stood out the most in 10 years. Starting from the end of November, it is really necessary to analyze which deaths affected and should be reported ”, says Jūratė Petrauskienė, Head of Statistics of Lithuania.

It is true that the modified calculation of the coronavirus data has also acquired more interesting data. After all, the number of people with coronavirus has dropped by as much as six times. Formally, more than 60 thousand people in Lithuania still suffer from coronavirus. It is true that there are already many people who have recovered and are going to work among these people. Therefore, after modifying the calculations, the Department of Statistics also presents the actual number of people currently ill. Just over 11,000 remain.

“We are introducing a statistical indicator that adjusts these numbers that are already in our database. We present the fact that a person’s card closes in 28 days, we present that a person is likely to have recovered,” says J. Petrauskienė.

It is estimated that 8.5 percent of people in Lithuania may have already acquired immunity against the coronavirus. This percentage was obtained by estimating how many Lithuanians are currently infected with coronavirus, have antibodies and have been vaccinated.

It is true that, although Lithuania has set a goal of vaccinating around 70 percent of the population before Mindauginiai, Minister Arūnas Dulkys tends to make those optimistic dreams come true.

“We have stated that we will tell not only positive knowledge but simply the truth as it is. Therefore, our vaccination schedules are currently being made public, which are based on the facts of when a vaccine will arrive in Lithuania. Unfortunately, these charts up to Today they do not show such a possibility that we will achieve that goal in the summer. However, those schedules are changing little by little, “says A. Dulkys.

In total, more than 84 thousand people have already been vaccinated against the coronavirus in Lithuania. Just over 50,000 received a second dose of COVID-19. In total, about 236 thousand people in Lithuania can already have immunity.
