Vilma Burneikienė from Miežiškės, a young farmer from the Panevėžys district, is also interested in these tomato varieties. Her admiration for tomatoes became Vilma’s exclusive hobby.

Variety of tomatoes

In a woman’s greenhouse, it grows from the world’s smallest tomatoes, barely the size of a fingernail, to beauties that are almost the size of a soccer ball. Not only do tomatoes of various sizes ripen in Vilma’s greenhouses, but when she enters the greenhouse, her eyes are dazzled by the colors of the tomatoes: red, yellow, cherry, margarine, green, and even black.

V. Burneikienė can talk for hours about tomato varieties, their germination, the collection of seeds. This year’s women’s greenhouse collection combines more than 200 different varieties of tomatoes.

“I have been interested in tomatoes since childhood; my mother worked as an agronomist and was infected with tomato disease. All her life until now she has been accompanied by these plants, their seedlings and seeds. Mom grew tomato seedlings and sold them. I helped her and took over this business. However, most of the plants I grow are still tomatoes, “Vilma began, joking that she grows other plants, including Lithuanian watermelons, which have grown well this year.

Tomatoes as a good dessert

According to barley, she likes tomatoes better and explains why she is so in love with these vegetables.

“Tomatoes come in many shapes. And drops, tubs, round and oblong, and most importantly, they come in a variety of flavors. Tomatoes are brutally delicious (quat). I gave my husband a taste of a farm tomato. , and he didn’t look at what she was giving him and thought he was eating an apricot.

Tomato of that variety as a good dessert fruit. Especially delicious black, orange with red accents. They all have exotic fruit flavors, ”explained Vilma, admiring the variety of tomatoes, that the taste of the different varieties of tomatoes is quite different from the usual one grown by grandmothers.

Lithuanian varieties preserved

The woman admires tomatoes so much that she no longer grows anything and says that people are interested in the two new varieties and remember the old ones.

“They are interested in both traditional round tomatoes and giant, incredibly cracked tomatoes, which are very convenient when traveling. Tomato seeds have come to me in various ways. They come from the time of my grandmother and I am very confident with those seeds.

They are even called in Lithuanian – “Obelėle”, “Kupriius terba”. I couldn’t even say how old those old tomato varieties are, but I grow them, take care of them and protect them, ”Vilma said about grandma’s preserved tomato seeds, but she also enjoyed the new varieties: mixed colored cherry tomatoes or stained.

He even came from Australia

V. Burneikienė said that he has tomato seeds, which in return even came to him from far away Australia.

“There is such a breeder who raised dwarf tomatoes. They are strong and their roots are firmly attached to the ground. I have about 30 varieties of them. Tomato seeds come not only from Australia, but also from the United States, England.

I buy a variety of seeds in exchange. After all, collectors are interested in new varieties and exchange seeds with each other. It’s not surprising or surprising that they have 300 or 400 varieties, ”Vilma said, not surprising that collectors have a lot of seeds in their collections and are willing to share them.

The tomato lover admitted that she had the most delicious dessert tomatoes.

Collect seeds

The tomato grower told the newspaper “Tėvynė” that now is the time to discard the tomato seeds.

“When the tomato is fully ripe, we choose the best tomato from the first or second bunch, which corresponds to the color, size, shape and flavor.

We save the seeds of such tomatoes. We put the seeds removed with heat, they ferment, they sour. A smooth shell should come off the seed. Then the seeds are washed and dried. When the seeds are dried, they are packed, placed in bags and sent to whoever ordered them ”, said Vilma, how the tomato seeds are extracted and what path they follow until they reach the tomato growers.

The most important thing is a good harvest.

The tomato lover admitted that she had the most delicious dessert tomatoes.

“I like sweet and fruity tomatoes better. It could be Kozula 24, green copy. Amazing variety “Okean cherry”. She really likes children. When you choose a small tomato, it will always be delicious. And those little ones go from completely white to red, green, black. Sometimes I grow tomatoes just for taste and beauty.

In the spring I make seedlings. This year I had more than 100 seedlings of tomato varieties. People come from almost all of Lithuania to buy them. If some variety does not grow, I no longer grow or multiply. I grow and multiply those tomatoes that are delicious and fruitful, ”said V. Burneikienė sincerely and admitted that the most important thing is to get a good result and harvest.

The daughter grew up among the tomatoes.

The same was confirmed by Vilma’s mother, Regina Valiukienė, who joined the conversation.

“I grow hybrid tomatoes in a greenhouse and sell them. Tomatoes are interesting to grow. They need to learn to grow. Especially tomato farming. They are difficult to grow but have a pleasant taste.

They differ from hybrids not only in that they are stunning colors, from completely white, purple, orange to completely black. Its flavor is also unique. They are for dessert, sweet, soft, thin-skinned or hard, taken by mouth, for all demanding tastes, ”he said.

Vilma’s mother said her daughter grew up among tomatoes and growing tomatoes was a hobby for her.
