Živilė Gudlevičienė, president of the Lithuanian Medical Movement (LMS), confirmed that as a surgeon, the doctor went to help simply by taking the Hippocratic oath and mourning the loss of a colleague.
At the same time, however, it also drew attention to an increasingly acute legal problem.
“What exactly is that legal protection? After all, this is a truly professional risk, for which you really not only have to be paid, but you also have to have insurance. After all, the man got infected at work and sacrificed his life to fight this dangerous and unknown infection. This also raises questions for others, because there will definitely be no first victims here, ”he said.
Ž. Gudlevičienė recalled that a pediatrician had already died from coronavirus:
“Probably just the beginning.”
Covid-19 does not choose, young or old
The medical community shared confidential records and colleague memories of a deceased colleague.
“Covidas and Death do not choose, neither old nor young. Doctor or patient. Today, the Lithuanian medical movement has lost you. You, an active member of the Board, participant in discussions and generator of ideas. You wanted so much to change, to change. You connected LMS to JGA and you did it!
Youth and wisdom … And then after the second wave of the pandemic, you said, “By the way,” I’m sorry, I will not participate in today’s discussion, because a little fight“… Fight…. And behold, you are no longer. Forgive us for not being able to save you. We and all of us have done very little, we have not been able to help him.
Medike! Can we be protected by law in the performance of our duties and infected at work? Today we all see: this is a huge occupational risk. Dangerous working conditions. And here is the meaningless Death while on duty, because someone was cynically thrown into the fire by barefoot and bald doctors … This death is very painful for us. Will we humbly remain silent for a long time? ”- The Lithuanian Medical Movement shared on Facebook.
Full of strength and faith to change the system
He also shared his condolences on the loss of a colleague. Vytautas Kasiulevičius. He said that a well-known doctor came to the Lithuanian medical movement full of ideas and faith:
“It just came to our attention then. Covid-19 mercilessly kills those to whom you have not been able to tell everything. In November 2017, he wrote me a message on a messenger and soon reached the Lithuanian medical movement full of ideas and convinced that we can change everything.
He sincerely believed that the system could be reformed, and perhaps I was his opponent too often on those sleepless nights of our online chats between the vision of a liberal healthcare system and a social democratic one. How much time and energy it cost him to travel from the other side of Lithuania to our meetings, rallies, visits to power, but he never said no.
Social activities seemed such a natural and unavoidable duty to him that I often felt uncomfortable living in Vilnius and not being able to spend time anywhere. And now that cool man is gone. Eventually even apologizing too late, but we will still meet there and discuss everything. Rest, buddy. “
Fighting back tears, Jurgita Sejonienė, a former LMS board member, said such a person could have bravely been a minister according to her competence.
“He was a very good and intelligent man, not so much an ideological leader of the medical movement, but a voice of our conscience. He really knew the health system a lot and could have been a courageous minister. “
