Both children arrived in Poland with their loved ones on August 23, after the Taliban seized power in their country. The family was quarantined at the Podkova Lesna migrant center, near Warsaw.

“The death of a child has been recorded,” said the report at the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw.

The six-year-old received a liver transplant earlier this week, but his condition has not improved.

The hospital reported that the children still ate poisonous mushrooms the day after arriving in the country under inexplicable circumstances.

The Office for Foreigners, which oversees migrant centers in Poland, said a total of five people needed medical help for an intestinal disorder. However, the service did not initially indicate that they eat the mushrooms.

On August 26 and 27, both brothers and their 17-year-old sister were hospitalized. They are believed to have been poisoned by green muskrats.

Later, the sister was discharged.

Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident.

Jakub Dudziak, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, denied a media report that the children were eating mushrooms because they were not getting enough food at the center.

According to him, the displaced “are fed three times a day”, their diet consists of “various ingredients with the appropriate amount of calories, in addition to dairy products, meats, vegetables and beverages.”

“As a consequence of this accident, the staff of the foreign centers will warn Afghans not to eat products of unknown origin,” he added.

News portal OKO.press reported that the children’s father, an accountant, had previously collaborated with the British Army for several years.

After the Taliban’s victory in Afghanistan, his family was evacuated by Polish soldiers at the request of the British.

Poland evacuated 1,231 people from Afghanistan; many of them have been relocated at the request of third countries and international organizations such as the European Union.
