“At first it was green berries, then it lights up, it turns orange. The most volatile form here is a decorative rowan, ”said Jurgita Ignotienė, curator of Botanical Collections.
Another rowan has already rushed to get rid of the leaves and shows an unusual white berry in sight.
“It is calmer and, as we can see, the leaves fall faster. Its variety is designed in such a way that it is afraid of frost, but the color is unique: white, we will not see it in nature, ”J. Ignotienė told LNK news.
There is a botanical garden of Klaipėda University and a brighter or softer pink rowan.
“Pink with a bit of a bluish hue, a very interesting color. Decorative here. Its variety is “Pink color”, said the interlocutor.
Another curiosity is the alder-leaf rowan, which hides berries under abundant leaves. 16 species of rowan and 10 varieties of rowan grow in the Klaipeda University Botanical Garden.
The berries of different varieties of rowan also have different flavors. Some are spicy or bitter, and others can already be put in the mouth, because they can be eaten like apples. There are varieties of rowan that ripen pomegranate-flavored berries. But botanists advise not to pick berries just yet, just to admire.
“Even in folk medicine, rowan was used as medicine and food only after the first frosts. I recommend this if we want more rowan to boost immunity, cool it a bit or put it in a chamber. Then defrost. In this case, some compounds break down and the bitterness disappears, ”said Asta Klimienė, director of the Botanical Garden at Klaipėda University.
Under the rowan berries, the ancients guessed the weather and believed that if there were a lot of rowan berries, the autumn would be wet and cold.
“Rowan, especially in our nation, is shrouded in myths. And what I like the most is that it is a family tree, that it is protected and that it should be in your house ”, said A. Klimienė.
Visitors to the botanical garden also know that the rowan is a special tree.
“I really like rowan and according to Lithuanian traditions, there should be a rowan near every house, because it repels angry forces. That’s what they say, “said a woman LNK journalists met at the Botanical Garden.
Botanists remind us that these trees are not only beautiful, but also have many beneficial health properties.
“It has many vitamins. Vitamin C is not inferior to lemons, as well as all kinds of other vitamins. They have carotenoids, they are easier to absorb than carrots, ”said A. Klimienė.
So, the rowan trees, especially the red ones, are boiled and refrigerated, and the juice is squeezed and dried. And they make the tea delicious.
