Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga states that a proposal has been submitted to the Government to abolish the requirement to use facial protection in public places in the near future. According to the Minister, with the gradual relaxation of the quarantine conditions introduced in Lithuania and the decrease in the number of infections, the obligation to wear protective equipment in public places may disappear.

“The government proposes that the obligation to wear protective equipment (ELTA) in open public spaces where people do not congregate could be removed,” Veryga said at a press conference on Tuesday. However, the Minister emphasized that the obligation to wear protective equipment in closed public places would remain.

“It would not work when people are inside,” he added.

The Minister did not dare predict when the obligation to wear protective equipment could be replaced by a recommendation.

“As long as this requirement remains, I would not dare speculate and say,” stressed the minister. According to him, the most important thing now is not to forget that one person is enough for the virus to spread, so it will not be possible to completely abandon the currently mandatory protection measures while there are infected people in the country.

“It all started with one case, and now there are not many in Lithuania, there are several hundred who are infected and can become infected.” These people are not only in medical institutions (…) When we no longer register cases of infection, we can talk about abandoning these measures, “summarized A. Veryga.

The government-approved requirement to wear facial protection in public places in Lithuania went into effect on April 10. Until then, it was only recommended to wear protective equipment to cover the nose and mouth (face masks, respirators, or other means).

After stabilizing the spread of the coronavirus in the country, the government made decisions in mid-April to ease some of the restrictions imposed on the population, as well as liberalize activities in various areas of business.
