On Tuesday, February 2, the National Transplant Office of the Ministry of Health coordinated the transplantation process of a donor registered at the Santara Clinics of the Vilnius University Hospital.
After the life of a sufficiently young person in the resuscitation of clinics was extinguished, his relatives, after talking with the doctors who supervised the patient, made the decision to donate his suitable organs for donation. With the consent of family members, the doctors evaluated the condition of the organs to make sure that almost all possible organs were suitable for donation.
Ideally, one organ donor can save up to 7 recipients. “In this case, only the lungs were not suitable for donation, the condition of all the other organs was really good, so the heart, liver, kidneys of two people and corneas of two were transplanted”, Artūras Bagotyrius, director of the National Transplant Bureau in SAM, informed about such rare cases. – The fact that one person has given even six others the opportunity to return to a quality life and defines the main essence and meaning of donation: donation provides a second chance at life. We are very grateful to the donor’s relatives for their decision. I have no doubt that each of those six people, as well as their family members, will agree with me that this is an invaluable gift. “
In preparation for the transplants, the medical discussion was sparked by a recipient waiting for the heart and who had been infected with COVID-19. Still, after intense discussions in an interdisciplinary medical team and research, the doctors decided that a heart transplant could be performed. With the growing number of people with COVID-19 being infected or reinfected in the country, doctors are considering each case to rule out the possibility of a transplant due to a coronavirus infection.
All but one of the organs were transplanted at the VUL Santara clinics, so up to four transplants were performed here on Tuesday, with the cornea being transplanted a bit later. A cornea for transplantation has been taken to the Kaunas Clinics of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences; the so-called emergency recipient will be transplanted.
Currently, 45 other people are waiting for a suitable heart donor, 91 for the liver, 114 for the kidney and 130 for the cornea. Recipients live an average of three years waiting for the right organ or tissue.
Heart and liver transplants are quite rare, 10 and 14 were performed in 2020, respectively. Kidney and cornea transplant operations are performed more frequently (82 in 2020, 45 in corneas).
To save as many lives as possible or improve your health, pairs of kidneys and corneas are transplanted into a pair of people: a kidney or a cornea. There are cases in which recipients meet while waiting for a transplant and, after the operation, they become friends: they are called kidney brothers or sisters.
Any adult residing in Lithuania can consent to organ donation. This can be done by signing an organ donation consent. After signing, a token donor card is issued. The consent can be signed online at https://ntb.lt and the card is sent directly to your home. When signing the consent, it is possible to indicate whether the total or partial donation of the corresponding organs and tissues is accepted.
