A painful loss in the world of science: the famous professor died

The teacher was born in 1936. July 28 In the village of Švendubrė (former district of Varėna). 1954 graduated from Druskininkai High School. In 1959 he graduated from the Faculty of Nature and Geography of the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. He acquired the specialty of professor of basic concepts of biology, chemistry and agriculture. 1959-1979 worked at the Institute of Botany. 1979-2010 taught at Vilnius Pedagogical University (until 1992 Vilnius Pedagogical Institute), 1980-2002. He worked as head of the Department of Botany, in 1999. He was awarded the pedagogical title of professor. 1967 At Vilnius University, Mr. Smaliukas defended his doctoral thesis “Lithuanian willows (Salix L), their biological and biochemical characteristics”. He defended his habilitation dissertation “Taxonomy, biology, phytocenology, biochemical properties and resources of the Lithuanian willow (Salix L)” at the Institute of Botany and obtained the title of licensed doctor.

The most important areas of the professor’s research are the botanical diversity of the plant species used in the Lithuanian wild flora, their distribution, biological and ecological characteristics, Lithuanian willow gene pool, clonal selection, morphological characteristics and genotype productivity. He has published more than 100 scientific articles, published books: Medicinal Plants (1973), Yeast Plants and Their Uses (1975, in Russian), Biologist’s Guide (1987), Lithuanian Useful Plants (1992),

Lithuanian Dendroflora (2003), Lithuania Red Data Book (2007; all others), Lithuanian Willows (Salix L.): Taxonomy, Biology, Biochemical Properties and Resources (1996).

Prof. Mr. Smaliukas was a member of the Commission of Experts on Natural Sciences of the Lithuanian Ministry of Education and Science, a member of the Permanent Commission of National Plant Genetic Resources and, together with colleagues from the Department of Botany, carried out extensive research on questions of science education in schools. For many years, the professor chaired the Council of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and was a long-time member of the University Senate. Thanks to his efforts, the university conservatory was established, the professor took great care of the student internship base of the Faculty of Natural Sciences in Tamošiava, led the field and production internships of the faculty students and research expeditions.

The Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences Alumni Society expresses its deepest condolences to the wife of the deceased, Apollonia, other family members and relatives. May the memory of a teacher remain in the memory of all of us for a long time, as an example of a hard-working and responsible teacher, loved and respected by students and colleagues.
