Valentina, a Vilnius woman in her eighties, takes care of the cemetery for her family friends, not hers, at the Vilnius Sudervė Cemetery. All members of this family say they are already dead, so there is no one to take care of this place. True, a woman orders the graves not only of friends but also of strangers.
“You know, for celebrations, if it is a grave without a candle, without a flower, we will build both a candle and flowers,” says Valentina from Vilnius.

The squirrel, who occasionally turns in a tree near the grave, is also lucky: the woman always comes out of the waiting room:
“It just came to our attention then. We feed it all year round. Today … is what I had. Few here are those crazy. And anyway, we leave her envelopes and she takes those envelopes. “
There are many graves, and when she can no longer manage them at all, Valentina will hire a company that will take care of all the maintenance work on the graves. Representatives of the companies that oversee the cemetery have noted that interest in such companies has increased almost several times over the past two years.
“Usually I seek… serious care to have them dig the grass. Watered flowers. The monuments are cleaned and things like that, ”says Darius Jakutonis, Stebul proyectos project manager.
And the companies that do that work keep graves four times a month for money. Prices range from € 70 onwards. It depends on who needs to do what job. Representatives of a grave management company noted that the number of calls with requests to organize graves increased further this year during the quarantine.
People were afraid of getting infected, so the companies asked for help and told them over the phone what and how to fix it. True, according to company representatives, people increasingly ask not to plant flowers or sweep, but to cover graves with panels.
“Or blocks or tiles to build everything. And all because there is really no one to supervise those things. Because there are many abandoned graves, and the people are already dead, there is no one to take care of those graves, the young people leave and they also do not have time to return ”, says Irena Matulevič, representative of the service company.
It is true that not all companies do that job honestly. Complaints about poorly ordered graves or a completely cluttered public space flickered.
What do you need to know?
It is true that as soon as we became interested in a complaint, the Vilnius resident, who had not been able to get the money back for three months, got it back immediately. The State Service for the Protection of Consumer Rights also receives complaints. Their representatives warn that before choosing a company to which we can entrust the management of our nearby graves, we must know some important rules.
First of all, it is advisable to read reviews about the chosen company in a public space.
“It is very important to record everything in writing. It is to agree on all the conditions, the deadlines, the work that needs to be done. What is the payment procedure, record everything in writing, ”said the service representative Natalia Jarmulkovič.
And sometimes no one can complain to the service, because the work is commissioned to illegally employed people.
“It just came to our notice then. And we all say that if you find business cards in graves, which is what most dishonest vendors do, don’t even call them because they have no business or responsibilities on your part. Just take the money, it advances and disappears. But people still apply, they think it will be cheaper, but they continue to be scammed, “says D. Jakutonis.
In such cases, consumer rights advocates simply shake hands: if work is ordered informally, the money will likely not be recovered and honest workers will have to be found, paid again.
