The Kaunas municipality is planning a parking lot on Karalius Mindaugas avenue, near the Žalgiris Arena, and it is being considered that it could have multiple floors in the future.
“After installing the site, we estimate that it will be able to accommodate 300 cars. The city council requests approval to allow the start of public collection procedures. We believe this may take about two years,” said Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Department of Management of Transport and Traffic of the municipality, in BNS.
This problem will be presented to the city council at the next meeting.
The site is planned on the plot located at Karaliaus Mindaugo ave. 52. According to the municipality, it has been observed that during the events taking place at the Žalgiris Arena, there is a significant shortage of parking spaces and there are cars parked on the surrounding streets and green areas.
On the island of Nemunas, where the Žalgiris Arena is located, the construction of a water sports center has started, and in the future the Mokslo Sala science popularization center should also be built. As no parking spaces are provided next to them, it is considered that a multi-storey car park may appear on this site in the future.
Obviously, the need will not be met, so in the future we do not rule out the possibility of building a multi-story building in this place parking lot”Said a representative of the municipality.
Currently, those who come to the events can leave their cars in the Akropolis parking lot, and the Žalgiris Arena also has a parking lot.
It is not yet clear whether the new parking will be paid for, but since parking costs on the surrounding streets and on King Mindaugas Avenue, it would likely be included in the toll zone as well.
