According to his recorded amendment to the Memorial Days Act, Sobriety Day should be celebrated on June 3.

This day has already been declared memorable, it is called Sąjūdis Day, recalling Lithuania’s reorganization movement that brought the country to the restoration of independence.

According to the initiators of Sobriety Day, including the “peasant” Minister of Health Aurelijus Veryga and the conservative Antanas Matulas, the sobriety movement established by Bishop Motiejus Valančius in the 19th century should be commemorated on this day.

It is a joke that in 2021 the 220th anniversary of the birth of M. Valančius will be commemorated.

It is proposed to announce Sobriety Day on June 3, because that day in 1989, in Vilnius, in the Kalnai Park, the action of pouring alcohol into the sewer “Lithuania! I will not drink, I prefer to pour!

“(…) Tens of thousands of people attended the alcohol campaign, hoping to get rid not only of the shackles of the occupation, but also of spiritual slavery, in which many people were pushed by alcoholism and drugs, “say the authors of the project.

According to them, alcohol consumption in Lithuania generates around 0.4 billion a year. The state spends about five euros on each euro of the alcohol business that goes to the budget to eliminate its consequences.
