Health Minister Arūnas Dulkys, who met with the director of the National Center for Public Health (NVSC) Robertas Petraitis on Friday, asked him to resign.

“Personally, I see big problems and today I suggested to the respected Petraitis that, in my opinion, the best option would be for him to resign from his current position,” A. Dulkys told reporters on Friday.

“They asked me to give myself time to think, so we agreed that I would wait for that answer until Monday morning,” he added.

The minister said his decision was well thought out.

“I thought very well and emphasize today that the entire history of the organization, especially during the crisis, is filled with a wide variety of internal stories and situations, but I think we have reached such a scale that we only need to ‘cross the Gordian knot’ . It is already the responsibility of leaders and managers to evaluate it in such situations and not look at it legally dry, bureaucratically dry, because we don’t have time, there is a crisis, we need organizations that function well, ”said A. Dulkys.

According to him, if R. Petraitis did not agree to leave, he would have to “find another way” and take “more bureaucratic actions”.

The Minister emphasized that the available data on R. Petraitis’ work could be evaluated during the official inspection, but did not mention specific cases.

“The material shows that there is a possibility that certain work errors have been made, which must be evaluated during the official commission of inquiry,” the minister said.

A. Dulkys says that he does not doubt R. Petraitis’ experience as a manager, but as a specialist, so he could take on the position not as a manager.

“I think the current leader could find another role, whether it’s in the health care system or elsewhere, and he wouldn’t see a problem with that,” he said.

NVSC representatives informed BNS that R. Petraitis has not yet commented on the situation.

Last Tuesday, A. Dulkys discussed the situation with R. Petraitis for unaccounted deaths related to the coronavirus, but said that the responses from the head of the NVSC were not convincing, so he asked to put them in writing.

At the time, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė reacted more harshly: she said that the NVSC leadership must take responsibility.

NVSC chief R. Petraitis announced at a press conference on Sunday that there had been a significantly higher number of unaccounted for deaths: 1,171, but assured that the situation was not due to the fault of the institution he ran, but to the lack of timely information from hospitals.
