According to the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the junior of the permanent initial mandatory service of the General Artillery Battalion Romualdas Giedraitis, born in 2000, died during guard duty.
“The accident occurred while the soldier was on duty, according to preliminary data, he committed suicide with a firearm,” the report says.
According to the army, the deceased came to the service voluntarily in March of this year, is described by the leadership as a soldier who performs well and matches his companions.
The Lithuanian Armed Forces Military Police are working at the scene to inform and sympathize with the soldier’s relatives.
Due to the incident, a pre-trial investigation is launched and the Defense Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces initiates an official inspection.
The leadership of the Ministry of National Defense and the Armed Forces of Lithuania expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the soldiers’ service.
