According to Russian news agencies, many people gathered again in the city of Khabarovsk on Sunday, where tens of thousands of people staged a peaceful demonstration on Saturday. It was one of the biggest protests in many years.
Public health officials urged people to stay home and not endanger others during the coronavirus pandemic. However, the protests are expected to continue for more than a day.
S. Furgal was arrested two weeks ago on suspicion of being involved in more than one murder 15 years ago. Although the politician denies the allegations, he will be detained in Moscow for at least two months.
The locals, who generally do not protest, are outraged that Moscow is trying to influence the country.
Two years ago, defending his innocence, Furgal was elected governor of the Khabarovsk region that borders China, defeating a former former member of the country’s ruling party, United Russia, in the elections.
The Furgal Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) has condemned the allegations of politically motivated murder.
