Without the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation System (EKMO), Eugenijus Dargužis, 52, who began treating a very serious condition on March 27 due to complications from the COVID-19 virus at Panevėžys Hospital, could not have been transported without not only Vilnius, but possibly rescued.

The saved man says he feels born a second time and today, when Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga thanked the Panevėžys doctors for fighting the coronavirus, he thanked the doctors in Panevėžys and the capital.

Born a second time

According to E. Dargužis, he was connected to the team for 27 days, but the treatment took much longer.

“I have been in this state for almost 40 days. Now I am in rehab in Likėnai. The doctors told me that I was a happy baby and that I was born a second time. I could not walk after the artificial coma when I woke up. Breathing is easier, pretty fast, ”he recalls the treatment and jokes that it may be the longest treatment for COVID-19.

I don’t remember much

The rehabilitation is nearing completion and we will return it to the family in a few weeks.

A Panevėžys resident rescued from a coronavirus says he doesn’t remember much because he didn’t actually live in a coma. “There were only dreams in which I saw him buried and I rose like a phoenix from the ashes. It was as if in a dream I saw that he was going everywhere with my bed, he was being treated, “says the man and continues:

“So far, doctors can’t say exactly when I’ll be back to work, but the prognosis is not bad. I’m a driver, so I’d love to start. We need more movement, sports. Rehabilitation can take two to three months. It’s difficult. say how long the treatment will last. “

The cure is unique.

Arvydas Skorupskas, director of the Panevėžys Republican Hospital, is very happy with E. Dargužis from Panevėžys.

“MI. The recovery of Dargužis is a unique case. He is a patient at the Panevėžys Hospital with this serious disease. He had to endure the worst effects of the COVID-19 infection. On April 2, according to the doctors at the Santara Clinic He was handed over to them. The doctors came in a special car and took them to Vilnius. The artificial washing was exposed to it for 27 days. However, this is half the job, after all, rehabilitation is needed. This process it has been entrusted to the Panevėžys Hospital. Rehabilitation is coming to an end and in a few weeks we will return it to the family, “said A. Skorupskas, stressing that this happy recovery is the success of the entire Lithuanian health system.

E. The recovery of Dargužis is a unique case.

The system is used in critically ill patients.

The EKMO system is used in particularly severe patients who are no longer assisted by oxygen therapy or artificial lung ventilation. It is true that only a few such devices in Lithuania can be the last hope for the survival of particularly severe patients infected with the insidious virus.

If it weren’t for the EKMO system, a 52-year-old man receiving treatment at the Panevėžys Hospital due to complications from the COVID-19 virus could not only be transported to Vilnius, but also rescued.

However, the Vilnius medical team, which went to Panevėžys in a special car, had to perform not only a complicated procedure, but also avoid a dangerous infection.

The patient transferred to Vilnius from the Panevėžys Hospital was treated in Unit I of Reanimation and Intensive Care of the Santara Clinics.

E. Dargužis, who was transported to Vilnius from Panevėžys, did not belong to the risk group; prior to infection, the man allegedly had no concomitant disease. But the patient had high blood pressure, putting him at greater risk to the patient’s life through artificial lung ventilation.
