The Curonian Spit is crowded: you can find accommodation, but prices are dizzying

No more seats

This weekend Neringa is crowded. All hotels are reserved, all vacation apartments are rented. Those who want to stay on the Curonian Spit are not put off by the high prices compared to other European resorts. And if we add one of the highest resort fees … and there are no more parking spots in the Neringa settlements, especially in Nida, right now. But the vacationer is still flocking.

According to the Booking system, there is currently no possibility for a family with two children to find accommodation for a weekend in Neringa. Two more people could spend the night at the Juodkrante hotel “Ąžuolynas”. The price of a night with breakfast would cost 172 euros. There was also a night in a private apartment in Juodkrante for 244 euros. The system offers accommodation in the surrounding areas, which are already on the other side of the Curonian Lagoon: Mingė and Klaipėda.

The cheapest apartments, which cost between 70 and 90 euros, did not stay until early summer.

However, the cars flow to Neringa in a continuous flow.

Thousands of machines

According to the mayor of the municipality of Neringa, Darius Jasaitis, more than 4,000 cars arrive in the territory of the Curonian Spit National Park (KNNP) administered by the municipality every day. According to the mayor, only a small part are “one day” tourists. Most stay at the resort for a day or more. Absolutely everyone arrives in cars that must be parked somewhere.

Delfi asked Irena, a Nida resident, who rents an apartment for tourists in one of the village apartment buildings, where her residents keep their cars, and shrugged, “Where there is space, there is construction. I don’t know where someone finds it, it stays there. “

Therefore, the usual view of the Neringa settlements is a place for a car in the courtyard of an apartment building, which is “occupied” by a chair or some object. Understand, it is for the tenant.

Hotels or villas have separate spaces for their clients’ cars, which are marked with special signs.

According to Aušra Feser, director of the KNNP leadership, cars cause a big headache in the summer, especially in July. “For some reason, people want to get close, whenever possible. They don’t follow any barriers, rules or prohibitions. We inspect every day and on weekends. We mark all the cars off-site with stickers and invite them to the administration. We talk, we talk … At first we warned, and if it happens a second time, there are fines, ”Delfi explained to A. Feser.

Free parking

In Soviet times, tourist parking lots were installed at the entrances of each Neringa settlement. In the long run, they were all privatized but not destroyed. Cars can be left in them even today. However, vacationers are reluctant to use them.

According to the mayor, all sites are open. In addition, at the site north of Nida, the municipality brought electricity, installed video cameras, and the owners allowed vacationers to use them for free.

“The park near Rūta is also open and allowed to be used. However, 4,000 cars arrive in Neringa per day, and all parking lots in Nida can accommodate approximately 650 cars in total, well, let’s say 1,000. That’s another 3,000 for stop “somewhere”: on the streets, in the courtyards, elsewhere, “calculated D. Jasaitis.

Are the tourists to blame?

Valentina, who rents apartments in the center of Nida on the banks of the lagoon, is happy that all rooms are reserved until the end of summer. The businesswoman admitted that despite the pandemic, prices did not rise.

“Last year we got up a little bit because we did the renovation. And we don’t appreciate it this year, “said Valentina, whose villa costs 95 euros for a night in an apartment in July-August.

Speaking about transportation issues, the businesswoman said she always writes to those who book that there is only one parking space for a room in the courtyard. Because there are those who want to come even with two cars.

“Why don’t vacationers have parking specifically for cars? Perhaps our citizens are unaware? This is a complex problem, as no government will manage those processes without the consensus of citizens, community, and society. Everyone should follow the same line Everyone needs understanding Sometimes arriving guests cause a bite, that everything is not good, it is full of transport, but if you have to park your cars, even more, for free … After everything, both tuk-tuks are full and taxis are full, you can drive and drive. But ours understand it differently. If it’s my car, it should be as close to me as possible … After all, the distances in Nida they are not crazy. I think we need to adjust my mindset. If we all adopt the provision that, when accepting tourists, we recommend that they unload their bags and transport the car to the storage place, certainly not or are we saying ‘no’. You just have to talk, you have to negotiate, “suggested Valentina.

According to Feser, it takes time to change habits. “Maybe not everyone likes the need to walk,” said the head of the park’s management.

Shows in Neringa

I wonder what to do after going to Neringa.

The novelty of this summer is a visit to the lighthouse. The opportunity to climb the oldest Lithuanian lighthouse costs 5 euros for an adult and 3 euros for a child.

The main entertainment, especially this sunny weekend, is a free seaside vacation.

Other entertainment is cycling or scooter between Nida and Pervalka. Because, among other settlements, the condition of the pavement of the bike path is unsatisfactory.

Bicycle rental prices: 3 euros per hour, 12 euros per day. Renting a scooter costs 10 euros per hour, 12 hours – 30 euros.

Other entertainment: a short one and a half hour boat trip around the lagoon. The price for one person is 10 euros.

There are also “cruises” to Minge and back with fish tasting. The cost of such a 5-6 hour trip is 50 euros per person.

Those who want to eat are investigating the possibility of being satiated in one of the cafes in Nida or another settlement in Neringa. The prices on them are definitely not the lowest. For some of the cheaper dishes, spaghetti, prices start at 7.5 euros, fried eel costs 22 euros, and beef fillet with pepper costs 19.7 euros.

There are cafes where the chops cost from 8 to 10 euros, the meatballs – 5 and the zeppelin – 6 euros.

But there is always an option. If those prices are too high, you can shop at the mall. The fact that it is very popular can be judged by the congestion at the front door and the long lines at the checkouts.
