Vastpilio street in the historical heart of Klaipeda was fixed: there was no ordinary reconstruction

The trajectory of Vastpilio street has also changed: the road has moved several meters south of Pilies street, which opens the possibility of marking the entire territory of the Klaipeda castle. During the works, the correct outline of the castle star was marked, green lawns were installed at the site of the old defensive walls and a pebble surface was installed at the site of the fossil surrounding the castle, according to the municipal report.

“This project is not a regular road reconstruction. The works were carried out in a particularly sensitive area: in the historical heart of the city of Klaipeda, therefore, it was necessary to carry out archaeological research, and to change the trajectory of the street, roadside warehouses were taken and demolished. Much attention is paid to the management of the surrounding territories, connections to the site of the Klaipeda castle. By renovating the spaces near the castle site, we strive to make make this part of the city attractive to both Klaipeda residents and city guests, ”says Klaipėda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas.

The territory of the site of the Klaipeda castle and the Vastpilio street that runs through it are spaces that are first seen by tourists arriving on cruise ships.

“Tourists who have left the city on foot from the Cruise Terminal often travel on the swing bridge, and guests on bus tours travel down Vastpilio Street, so it was especially important to order this area. When Klaipeda welcomes thousands of cruise tourists again after the end of the world coronavirus pandemic, they will see a completely different face of our city, “says Klaipeda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas.

During the reconstruction of Vastpilio Street, the adjacent spaces were renovated: recreation areas with benches were installed, new vegetation was planted, a new wooden path leading to the castle site was installed, and previously constructed roads were renovated. The fountain next to the road has also been preserved: if the road path had been changed, it would have been found on the pedestrian path, therefore, the fountain has moved a little more, a new swimming pool has been installed in the fountain, fountain equipment has been installed and seal figures have been preserved.

Reconstruction work on Vastpilio street was carried out by the Kauno keliai company. The contract was signed in 2018. September. The value of the works carried out is 2.8 million. EUR. Acceptance procedures are currently underway.
