The lake, which appeared just 15 years ago, has become a mystery to researchers – it has a version of why it’s so devastating

Gaet’ale Pond is actually a lake. It was formed because an earthquake activated the hot springs in the area. A small ravine 60 meters in diameter filled with water and became a very warm lake.

The water temperature in Gaet’ale is between 50 and 55 ° C. The lake water is always hotter than the environment, but the locals don’t get cold here just because of that. The salinity of the water here is as high as 43.3 percent. – Gaet’ale Pond is the world’s saltiest natural body of water. For comparison, the salinity of the Dead Sea is approximately 34.2 percent.

The water in the Gaet’ale pond is very rich in calcium and magnesium chlorides, but it also contains sodium and potassium ions. The lake water is slightly yellowish: it is provided by the compounds of iron and chlorine. Of course, this water is poisonous, but locals are in no rush to drink it. Dead birds are often seen around Gaet’ale. Scientists cannot say who killed them. Animals generally don’t drink that salty water; they really wouldn’t drink it enough to die. But there is another suspect.

Those hot springs after the Gaet’ale pond remain active. It is they who feed the lake: there are no rivers here. There are also a lot of bubbles in places where water comes out of the ground. Local scientists have discovered that it is an odorless gas that uses less scientific methods. Most likely – volcanic CO2. Those bubbles are likely to contain other, more toxic gases that also feed and poison birds and insects.

The Gaet’ale pond is of great interest to scientists. They want to see if the salinity of the lake will increase over time and how it will affect the soil around this body of water. True, no one can say how long the Gaet’ale Pond will live – another earthquake could destroy it again.
