The epidemic of COVID-19 coronavirus infection, which has been developing in the Shiite Republic since late February, has claimed more lives than in other countries in the Middle East.

The total number of victims increased to 11,731, said Sima Sadat Lari, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, on state television.

He added that another 2,613 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the last day, bringing the total to 243,051.

Iran said on Sunday it had registered the highest number of victims of COVID-19 in a day since the outbreak began, killing 163 infected people in the country.

Official statistics show that mortality and the number of recently registered infections are increasing, although the lowest rate of spread of the disease in almost two months was recorded in early May.

As the situation worsened, the government announced that it was mandatory to wear masks in closed public spaces.

According to Lari Lari, nine and 31 provinces in Iran have a “red” level of epidemiological risk, the highest in the country.
