Drivers with “vending machines” should be concerned: thousands may need to be placed

The interval of change is determined by the type of gearbox

“As with the engine, the gearbox oil must be monitored and changed on time at intervals specified by the manufacturer. Owners of cars with automatic transmissions must be especially careful, as even the slightest lack of oil can cause serious breakdowns, and any experiment is costly, “said Andrzej Husiatynski, head of the technical department at Total, the world’s leading oil manufacturer and fats in Poland.

According to the head of the technical department, the oil in the automatic transmission should be changed according to the type of gearbox and the number of kilometers traveled.

“Drivers with a dual-clutch transmission (DSG), especially popular with Volkswagen, Audi, Ford or Porsche, are recommended to change their oil every 50,000 to 80,000 km. If your car has a continuously variable transmission (CVT), recommends changing the oil every 60,000 to 120,000 km, “advised the specialist.

The expert notes that the oil change interval is generally specified in the car manufacturer’s recommendations, but there are also cases where some car manufacturers claim that the transmission requires no maintenance. According to A. Husiatynskis, even in this case, after 250,000 km, it is necessary to change the oil and filters, and once we are satisfied, the problems will inevitably be solved.

The most common cause of failure is lack of oil.

According to Tomás Mareckas, head of the Vilnius-based car service, not all drivers understand that it is necessary to change the oil in automatic gearboxes. Misleading information drivers choose not to, but are still forced to seek help later.

“New car owners can drive 200,000 without changing the oil. Km, but will still face problems later. Even if, after buying a used car, the driver notices in time that the automatic transmission oil has not been changed and takes care of it, it is very likely that no more problems will be avoided, because changing the oil is a preventive action, ”says the expert.

According to T. Mareckas, if the driver does not find the information provided by the manufacturer about the car’s oil change interval and the car’s instrument panel does not have a warning light that illuminates when there are gearbox problems, then the condition of the oil itself must be evaluated. The first signs are a dark color and a burning smell of petroleum products.

“The neat new automatic transmission oil is pink, greenish, or yellow, so if the oil in the gearbox crankcase is yellow or even black, it needs to be changed,” Mareck explained.

According to the specialist, it is very important to periodically check the oil level in the automatic transmission, as this is one of the most common causes of automatic transmission failure.

“The first sign is if the gearbox has started shifting more abruptly. Gear shifting while driving a car with an automatic transmission should be smooth, so if you feel that a higher gear is being driven late, we should check the transmission oil level, “said the specialist.

According to T. Mareckas, new car models generally no longer have an oil level gauge, so it’s not always possible to do it yourself. Without checking or changing the gearbox oil, it can be difficult to gear the gear over time or jerk when you gear it. In the worst case, it will not be possible to hook the equipment and the car must be transported to a garage.

Overpay to save

Experts warn that drivers often make mistakes when trying to save. Andrzej Husiatynski, a Total representative, emphasizes that it is especially important to use only the specification and certification oil specified by the car manufacturer.

“If you save money on quality oil and choose the cheapest one later, you have to pay several tens of times more for transmission repair, so it is especially important to consider the quality of the oil.” It is also advisable to choose products from those manufacturers that work directly with automakers and can offer drivers specialized oils for various types of transmissions, ”said a Total spokesperson.

Another common mistake, according to T. Marecko, is choosing teachers who don’t have the proper specialization or experimenting on their own.

“A master expert at changing the engine oil will not necessarily be able to change the transmission oil. Trying to save and do the work on your own is also not a good idea. Without special equipment, only 30-50 percent of the old oil can be drained from the gearbox, and the rest of the old oil in it will not guarantee the proper functioning of the automatic gearbox, “explains the specialist.

Today, changing the automatic transmission oil, depending on the amount required, can cost from 25 euros. In comparison, the cost of repairing an automatic transmission can vary eight times for those who are tired of proper maintenance.
