China had already largely controlled the virus when hundreds of people became infected with the coronavirus in Beijing, and cases were later reported in neighboring Hebei province.
Health officials said Sunday that the Ansin district, some 150 kilometers from Beijing, would be “completely closed and controlled.” Similar measures were taken in Uhan during the peak of the pandemic earlier this year.
The China Epidemic Prevention Group said in a statement released that from now on, only one family member in the county will be able to leave home to buy essentials such as food and medicine.
In the past, there were some travel restrictions in the county, but now people are only allowed to leave their homes for medical care.
These measures were taken after another 14 cases of coronavirus in Beijing in the last day. A total of 311 such cases have been confirmed in the Chinese capital since mid-June.
First, a new outbreak of the virus was detected in the huge Sinfaji wholesale food market in Beijing, from which fresh produce is supplied to almost the entire city, raising concerns about the safety of the food supply chain.
Ansin county companies supply freshwater fish to the market, the Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.
About 12 cases of coronavirus were later detected in the area, 11 of which were market-related, the state newspaper The Global Times reported.
