The Žalgiris club announced on Friday that it was firing 39-year-old M. Schiller and that he would be replaced by 54-year-old J. Zdovc from Slovenia.
Unlike M. Schiller, J. Zdovc himself has played professional basketball at a very high level for many years, in his field as a basketball player he holds the titles of world champion (1993), European champion (1989 and 1991) and Olympic Vice President. -champion (1988).
Representing the Limoges CSP team, he helped the team to win the Euroleague in a sensational way in 1993. J. Zdovcas played basketball professionally in 1984-2003, he played for the teams of Slovenia, Italy, France, Greece and Croatia.
The former player took over as coach immediately after the end of his professional career. Unlike M. Schiller, who did not give freedom of emotions during the match next to the substitute bench, the new Žalgiris coach occasionally allows himself much more.
In 2015-2017, while training at AEK Athens, J. Zdovcas has repeatedly found himself in the spotlight of the operators due to the nature of his communication with the players. He also coached the French Boulevard Metropolitans 92, Sarajevo Bosna, St. Petersburg Spartak and Zagreb Cedevita teams, with whom he competed in the European Cup.
During his career, the Slovenian has also worked for Split in Croatia, Slovan in Slovenia, Iraklis in Greece and AEK in Athens, and Gaziantep in Turkey.
J. Zdovc coached the Slovenian national team in 2014-2016, but then no louder victories could be achieved.
The most serious achievements in the club tournament were the title of best coach of the European Cup in 2012, when the Slovenian successfully led the St. Petersburg team, which at that time had a very strong line-up. He has also managed to lead the teams he coaches to the titles of the champions of Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
