“We will get acquainted with the structure of the hospitals and have a big meeting at Klaipeda University. We will try to explain what is the possibility of establishing the Klaipeda University Hospital,” said Antanas Matulas, chairman of the Health Affairs Committee, on the eve of the meeting.
According to him, the initiative to establish a university-level treatment center in Klaipeda was demonstrated by some politicians from the port city and parliamentarians representing that region.
“There were such intentions before, but we still met resistance from Klaipeda City Council members and the mayor, now we were pleasantly surprised and together with the ministry leadership we sat down and saw the possibility of creating a third university center,” he said. A. Matulas.
According to him, the hospitals currently operating in the city are too small for a center of this level, so connecting them will be considered.
“We see that it would be possible to convert one of the four hospitals in Klaipeda into one by merging the Klaipeda University Hospital; it is a municipal hospital, whose name simply contains the word ‘university’, Mariners Hospital,” said A. Matulas. .
But according to him, it will be necessary to change the law so that Klaipeda University can become a shareholder of the university hospital.
“Today, the law says that the founder is the Ministry of Health and a university that conducts three-cycle doctoral studies. Klaipeda University does not study doctors, it carries out nursing specialists, ”confirmed the head of the Health Affairs Committee.
He and a group of Seimas members registered amendments to the Health Care Institutions Law that establish that a higher education institution that carries out medical or nursing studies can be a shareholder in a university hospital.
“In that case, Klaipeda would come together and could become the founder of that third center in Lithuania,” said A. Matulas.
The same project provides for Lithuanian university hospitals to operate in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda.
“I would see a lot of prospects for that center. If Klaipėda joins that network transformation plan, there will be an opportunity for big investments in infrastructure, equipment and other things. Without a doubt, in this case both the Klaipėda region and the patients would win, they would not have to go to Kaunas or Vilnius to receive many services. They would receive dignified and quality services on the spot, ”the chairman of the Seimas committee told BNS.
At present, there are three personal health care institutions with the status of university hospital in Lithuania: Vilnius University Hospital, Santara Clinic, Vilnius University Hospital, Žalgiris Clinic and Lithuanian University Hospital of Sciences of Health, the Kaunas Clinic.
