According to the workers sent to Lithuania, the situation in the camps is sad. Conditions in the visited camps are unsatisfactory both from a humanitarian and legal point of view, the Estonian Refugee Council said.
Their representatives said that there were, among other things, serious problems with the supply of warm clothing and food, a safe environment for children, access to legal assistance, adequate sanitation and medical care.
According to them, there have been situations in which border guards assigned to guard the camps dehumanize refugees who have become victims of international power games, and the on-site interview revealed serious mental health problems for the people.
The Estonian Refugee Council says it is very concerned about Lithuania’s decisions that restrict people’s access to the asylum system and that result in people being detained indefinitely.
In early September, the Estonian Refugee Council collected clothing, bedding and shoes, which, according to the Lithuanian Red Cross, are among the most needed items in 34 refugee camps.
Using donations collected in Estonia, humanitarian aid was sent to a collection point in Vilnius. Two refugee humanitarian workers were also sent to Lithuania for a week to help with the daily work of the Lithuanian Red Cross in the border camps.
These workers also recorded the needs and conditions of the camps and collected people’s stories.
The Estonian Refugee Council notes that if this need persists, it will continue to collect donations and support refugees in Lithuania.
This year, more than 4.1 thousand people illegally entered Lithuania through the border with Belarus. migrants.
Vilnius accuses the Minsk regime of organizing migration flows and calls it hybrid aggression. As a result, a state of emergency has been declared in the country.
