Artūras Spirgys, a businessman who smokes fish in Nida during season 34, says that August was very good and made up for the losses in July.
“It just came to our attention then. Because of the heat, people chose light foods and there was no demand for smoked fish,” said A. Spirgys, famous for his smoked fish in Nida. According to him, the trade was better than in July, even in May or June, and smoked fish lovers’ fashions are changing.
“Young people ask for as few bones as possible, so smoked squid, redfish and mackerel are very popular,” says A. Spirgys. For the older generation of buyers, the most important thing is that the fish is local, from the Curonian lagoon, so they mainly buy sea bream, perch and sturgeon.
“Bream is also the most popular for transporting wolves, buying eels and catfish, but wild catfish is already a rarity,” says A. Spirgys.
It also disproves the myth that there are no fish in the Curonian Lagoon. “They are full, they were caught and released in summer because it was too hot, the temperature was 28 degrees, the fish was already” boiled “in the lagoon, it is not suitable for smoking,” A. Spirgys told “Western Rapido”.
Latvians are gone
Deividas Biržys, the manager of the camp near Palanga, Nemirseta, told the Western Express that the summer was really good. From early June to mid-August, the average occupancy of the camps was around 80 percent.
“Last year, because of the fighting restrictions, people just traveled, this year it was really freer, but the season was really good,” said D. Biržys. According to him, there are usually around 60 caravan spots in the camp, but there were weekends where 100 campers had to be accommodated.
People were also staying in tents at the hotel. Young people greatly appreciate the old railway caravan that has adapted to life on the campsite. “There were days when 2,000 people stayed with us at the same time,” recalls D. Biržys on peak weekends.
According to him, most of the visitors are Lithuanians, but at the end of the season, vacationers from Germany and Estonia appeared. However, there were no tourists from Latvia and Poland who discovered Palanga last year.
There is also a growing number of long-term vacationers who park their mobile home throughout the summer and relax with family or friends. Last year there were only 12 regulars of this type, and this year already 40. The administrator of the campsite did not realize that this way someone would have created a business and rented a mobile home on separate days, well, unless be friends.
“The flow of visitors to our restaurant has also changed, more people are coming from the country and the residents of the camp are ‘grilling’ on site, in their own place,” said D. Biržys. According to him, the campsite plans to operate throughout the year this year. During the low season, various events are held here, personal celebrations, weddings and business conferences are organized here.
“The prices of services have not changed, but they are dynamic and constantly change according to employment,” said D. Biržys. According to him, the novelty of this season at the campsite were the new professional outdoor tennis courts, and a new outdoor swimming pool is planned in the area next year.
“We want to become a recreation and accommodation complex that offers more services,” shared D. Biržys.
Locals don’t work
Birutė, who works as a room attendant in Neringa, in a hotel (name changed.
“The locals don’t do that job, they manage the rooms unless they rent them themselves. We come from all over Lithuania: Telšiai, Mažeikiai, even Rokiškis “, – Birutė names the internal labor migration routes. According to her, this year the hotel where she works was full all summer and even at the beginning of September.
“A lot of foreign tourists, from Germany, Poland,” says Birutė. According to her, at the end of the season, tourists were attracted to various sporting events.
Does not accept everything
Virginia, who rents rooms in downtown Nida, told the Western Express that there were a lot of people who wanted to stay this year, but she wasn’t accepting everyone.
“I stay with myself at home, but only acquaintances, those who have been driving for many years, have verified it. He doesn’t make all the money, he wants more peace of mind, “Virginia says of her business model. She says she wasn’t very interested in how others were doing the business, although she noted there was no shortage of people in Nida.
This year, one of the biggest novelties among the hotels in Nida was the first season of SPA Nida. The hotel manager, Robertas Lukošius, told the Western Express that the first season was like meeting Neringa.
“It will be possible to draw conclusions in a year, but the season was good, the rooms are full,” Lukošius said. According to him, the hotel will be open all year round. More off-season employment is expected on weekends.
The coast attracts Kaunas residents
Liudmila Juknienė, head of the Dreverna Recreation and Entertainment Port Tourism Department, told Western Express that the accommodation occupancy rate in July-August this year was as high as 100 percent. In June, the figure was around 70 percent.
“Summer is as good as last year,” summarized L. Juknienė. According to her, the pandemic has only reduced the flow of foreigners. Previously, before the pandemic, they accounted for up to 15 percent of traffic and the geography covered up to 40 countries, and now they hold each other up.
Traditionally, the coastal region has been loved by local tourists, mostly residents of the Kaunas region, who have their own feelings. However, this year there was also a significant increase in the flow of Vilnius residents.
“This year we were visited by tourists from Germany and the Netherlands, who due to restrictions were unable to come last year and had chosen not to get the money back from the reservation, but to reschedule their trip,” says L. Juknienė. New to this year’s Dreverna port is a separate day ticket to the water entertainment area for visitors who do not live in the port. The aquatic entertainment area with pool and saunas has been filled with new outdoor water slides this year.
The leisure and entertainment port of Dreverna continues to receive visitors every day throughout the year. “We will also have news for next season, but we have not announced them yet until the work is finished,” intrigues L. Juknienė.
