France learned of the sad news on Monday with the death of its legendary actor, New Wave film icon Jean-Paul Belmondo.
Politicians, sports stars and other celebrities were among the thousands of people who attended an exclusive ceremony at the Palais des Invalides in Paris, where President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech in honor of the deceased.
“We love Belmond because he is like us,” Emmanuel Macron said at the ceremony.
Observing Belmond’s work with new wave directors François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, the French president described him as a “French movie star like no other.”

Macron noted that Belmondo was also “unforgettable” in the work of other innovative French authors such as Jean-Pierre Melville, Alain Resnais and Claude Chabrol.

Thousands more gathered to watch the ceremony on giant screens.
The last such tribute was paid to former President Jacques Chirac in 2019.
“It just came to our attention then. It’s like saying goodbye to an old satellite, a man who has been there since I was a teenager,” Brigitte Ratou, a 66-year-old retiree, one of the first to arrive on the scene, told AFP. Thursday.
The funeral will take place on Friday only with the closest relatives.
