The Kaunas family bought a 19th century mansion: others were afraid to see the state of the building

Kristina met Ivan completely by accident: “When I was a teenager, I met my future husband online, you can say, by chance, if you want to learn Spanish. As an Argentine, he was still living in the province of Buenos Aires at the time, practically on the other side of the world.

For three years we communicated remotely, then we met and today we are already celebrating the 13th anniversary of acquaintance and the 8th wedding anniversary and we are surrounded by the perfect chaos of three little ones. While we were living in Lithuania, we had Augustas, and in Spain we had twins Isabelė and Máximo ”.

Does not like to plan

Kristina says that starting a business with her husband perfectly coordinated their careers: “We are currently setting up a business with my husband at Blue Whale Studio, where we perfectly coordinate our careers: information technology engineer, I am a digital marketing specialist, together we help other companies to achieve their goals by adapting the latest generation digital tools from communication to the development of complex gadgets.

Kristina's family

The trade name (in Lithuanian “Blue Whale Studio”) betrays our values of sustainable business solutions, in cooperation with customers, to contribute to the reduction of plastic in the oceans, protecting the largest mammals on earth. “

There seems to be no shortage of activity for the spouses. Kristina even admits that buying a mansion was certainly not included in the plans. The woman says she never imagined she would be where she is now.

“Our family and friends know that we are not among those people who plan their life 10 years in advance, in no way, we are guided by improvised decisions, we are not afraid of challenges and discomforts. Our children are also “hardened”. A dynamic lifestyle forced me to learn three languages at the same time, to be independent and tolerant of change ”, says the interlocutor.

I was fascinated by the environment

Kristina says that when she returned to Lithuania, she was not really planning to buy a home, but instead felt that she should stay as long as possible without committing to things, location, banks and the like.

One night, Kristina’s husband noticed an ad about a red brick building for sale. The interlocutor says that he had no expectations, he just went to see.

“When we arrived, we were carried away by the unexpected atmosphere of the building: the interior was incredibly welcoming and the exterior also radiated history. Asked by the voice of the heart, we decided that this farmhouse of the manor house should belong to us, because if you have already committed , then at least noble, restoring the abandoned. We loved what others did not appreciate, “says the woman.

History of the mansion

According to the interlocutor, sources claim that since 1805 the land belonged to the wealthy Šumskai family, and since 1850, three generations of the family have lived in the manor house.

“They had a brick factory, thanks to which not only this house stands, but also several buildings in the old towns of Vilnius and Kaunas. Later, Šumskas set up a primary school at home for his own children and those of the village. He dedicated the entire second floor to science. During the war, this building witnessed the war front and battles, withstood explosives, even Napoleon Bonaparte crossed the farm road in 1812, before the war with Moscow, to spend the night in a neighboring mansion before a trip to Vilnius, ”says Kristina. about the history of the house.

During the period of deportation to Siberia, the family was forced to flee. After leaving home he went to Poland. After the great coups, the manor house passed to the state and changed its status and became a school. It worked until 1990, later when the town was emptied, it was closed and abandoned, but it still belonged to the state. For 30 years, the historic building has been destroyed by vandals and curious passersby. Broken windows, demolished stoves, burned shelter. This year, the building, which has the status of a school, was sold at auction, not as cultural heritage. Two months ago, Kristina and Ivan bought the mansion from a man who won the auction.

The desire to restore

Kristina says that some people who also wanted to buy the mansion freaked out as soon as they found out about its status.

“Many say that the renovation is more expensive than the construction of a new one, we supported it and decided to buy the mansion not for financial freedom. In that case, we should be millionaires, but we are not and we don’t want to be. After all, there is no talk of bank support for such “sordid” projects. The choice was based in part on a personal principle: not to build a new one, but to restore the old one. Just as we do not support the culture of consumerism, we do not particularly sympathize with the construction of new templates, ”says a woman about a sustainable project.

According to the interlocutor, the only thing the couple promised was not to go crazy, because they noticed that most of the people who build or renovate a house do not shine with joy:

Kristina and Ivan Horoman

Why does the path to a dream have to be so complicated? That is what we will try to find out, we will try to check where the gaps are in the process. Maybe in public institutions, maybe in private companies, maybe in the construction sector in general, or maybe just in people’s minds? We have made the whole process public on Instagram (@ the.horomans) from the beginning and we share all the details. “

Anti-stress therapy

According to Kristina, at the moment, the couple is trying to tame the future home: “We want to know each brick, we want to blow the dust ourselves before serious work begins. We spend almost every weekend there, men and weekdays. I will not hide, a great anti-stress therapy for knocking down walls, knocking down floors and other unnecessary structures. Family and friends are happy to contribute to these jobs, because it is both entertainment and meaningful work. “

Ivan and Kristina are not afraid to spend the night in a tent or in a car. I’m glad I can take a dip in the lake, warm up by the campfire, and cook dinner under the starry sky after work.

“We are currently working on our own and we are happy with the visible progress. Each open space creates a vision: there will be a kitchen, there will be a study here, etc. We are now actively looking for an architect who is sympathetic to historical buildings and enhances our dream. ”Says the woman.

Increased motivation

According to the interlocutor, the couple is more motivated by the desire to preserve the historic building. Kristina says that it is very easy to demolish, also to build, and very difficult to restore.

“The joy of progress is indescribable, especially if the work is done with your (ignorant) hands. After all, my husband and I have mastered computer keys, but certainly not saws and other construction tools, ”smiles Kristina.

The couple will also strive to preserve authenticity using smart technology. They will help to be more environmentally friendly. However, the ideas of the interior are not at all futuristic, on the contrary, the couple is infinitely fascinated by medieval details and outdated building solutions:

“In the past, people built houses with their own hands, without any engineering education, and both wooden shacks and brick houses still stand. We notice that natural materials from people’s natural and hard-working hands speak louder than current innovation dictionaries in the construction industry. “

The woman dreams that in five years she will be able to celebrate her 35th birthday, surrounded by a stately atmosphere: “But even if I fail, I will not get angry because I think we grow up in discomfort. So we are enjoying a stage of growth and new experiences, I hope the motivation does not fade, maybe it even grows, and we will decide, for example, to become farmers! ”.
